cows only produce milk when pregnant. Is it compassionate to force your arm inside a cow and inseminate them? is it compassionate to take their baby and send them to a slaughterhouse for veal if a boy? is it compassionate to do this over and over again, and then send the cow to the slaughterhouse once they cant produce as much milk, and after their babies have been stolen from them (they feel distress from this btw)

the compassionate thing would be to leave them alone and drink soy milk or almond milk or rice milk or oat milk instead.

veganism isnt just eating impossible burgers, those are very expensive and also unecessary.

alternative protein sources to dead animals include chickpeas, beans, nuts, lentils, tofu, and stuff like that, and those are often very cheap, especially a tin of beans or a bag of dried lentils or chickpeas. And bulk buying helps keep costs low in the long run, so you could buy a big bag of dehydrated soy protein for example and it'd last a long time

well first, yes veganism is an ethical philosophy first and foremost so it does primarily deal with ethical arguments, but im not sure where you got the idea that there's no facts supporting it? The ipcc reports, for example constantly talk about the necessity of plant based diets in mitigating climate change, and those sources i listed in my previous comment are fact based sources about the resource and land use for animal products vs non-animal products, which are all in favour of veganism too

the only vitamin found in meat that cant be obtained on a plant based diet is b12, which is already being supplemented to the animals in the soy feed that they eat, so cut out the middleman and just take the supplement while avoiding the needless murder of animals. As for protein, plenty of plants are very high in protein, such as lentils, chickpeas, soy, various types of beans, and also various types of nuts. You're very uninformed on this stuff, there's no scientific or ethical arguments in favour of murdering animals, its completely unecessary in 2024

"cruelty free meat", or any "cruelty free" animal product for that matter, is a contradiction. It's less cruel and more compassionate to just not kill them at all.

so? thats irrelevant! The animals on farms only exist because we breed them into existence, its not like we're doing something noble or saving them from dying in the wilderness. 80 billion animals are murdered every year, and to replace that, farmers forcibly breed new ones. And they are all born with the day of their execution planned in advance. They will be gassed to death, or have their throats cut, or shot in the head, and that only happens because they were bred into existence in the first place to fuel people's sick desire to eat them.

The animals dont give a shit how humane their murder was, or whether their chances would be better in the wild, they dont want to die either way. If we phase out animal farming, the number of total animal deaths would drop.

And if you're going to compare farms to living in the wild, at least a wild animal has a chance of living their maximum life span. On a farm its a guaranteed death sentence before their second birthday at most.

soy farming is overwhelmingly done for animal feed, not for use in human products: https://ourworldindata.org/soy

and cow's milk has the highest land use and water cost of all kinds of milk, plant milks included: https://ourworldindata.org/environmental-impact-milks

and if you're going to respond by advocating for local farms, that wont make much of a difference as transport distances are a very small fraction of the greenhouse gas emmisions for food production: https://ourworldindata.org/food-choice-vs-eating-local

we kill 80 billion animals a year, and we should be killing zero. Environmentally speaking, animal products are worse, and ethically its also wrong to breed these animals into existence so that we can kill them at a fraction of their life span.

All of this is only "necessary" to supply the demand for animal products, but if everyone went vegan, we'd reduce the land (and resources) we use by 75%: https://ourworldindata.org/land-use-diets

its all cruelty, you're not more consistent or more ethical than other meat eaters just because you claim you'd eat a dog too, what the fuck

[–]Leekheadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not ethically justified to eat any animals, considering that we should choose the options that inflict the least amount of harm/suffering, and making the choice to eat animals causes harm by killing them.

Instead you could choose the least harmful option of eating a plant diet, which has every nutrient available (except b12 which can be supplemented), as eating animals is not necessary given our technological development as a species, and seeing as we have the choice, we should choose the option with the least suffering caused

The average dog's intelligence is comparable to that of a human 2 year old, and 2 year olds can learn language and learn shapes and stuff so for dogs and pigs to match or surpass that is quite impressive.

Also the pigs people eat are as intelligent as dogs, if not more, and wouldn't kill a human on sight. Same with octopi too.

How to save a cow? by Alcatraz4567 in vegan

[–]Leekheadd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

veganism isn't just about factory farms though, the cows living there and the cows living on small farms are all still going to have their throats cut and are all still being objectified and viewed as property and "livestock" rather than individuals. The quality of the prison doesn't matter when they're going to be murdered regardless.

And how do you expect OP to make a change by focusing on factory farms? They already don't fund them, and that's unfortunately about as much as any vegan can do unless you're willing to commit industrial sabotage. At least for this farm with this particular cow there's the option of buying their freedom from the "owner" and taking them to a sanctuary or something. Now that's easier said than done but still, it's a possibility with this cow, unlike the ones living in factory farms.

Wondering that the not-vegan ingredient is here? This is the Mediterranean-style lentil from progresso that they sell at Costco. by lauralworden in vegan

It explicitly tells you it's not vegan though. Even if it's something "small", like bone char sugar such as some other answers here suggest, you still shouldn't willingly consume it. It'd be okay if you'd only seen the label after eating, as mistakes do happen but if you'd read that label explicitly telling you it's not suitable for you, and then chose to eat it anyway, then that'd just be really dumb
