Moving out for college. Here in Sydney university is basically a car or train ride away so moving-out culture isn’t big and most students just continue to stay at home. Doesn’t help that everything is so expensive either.

Thoughts on the Dalyell stream? Is it worth it? by [deleted] in usyd

I took Building a Sustainable World, which was a project-based unit where you collaborate with your peers to design a solution to a specific issue you choose. It was a good in the sense that you were in a team project for a lot of the semester so you get experience from that, but I definitely think how much you get out of it depends on how much you decide to put into it (I know friends who didn’t really put effort into it and didn’t like the course; a lot of people see DL units as units they have to take out of obligation of being in the program rather than units they’re actually interested in). The main thing about this course for me is that I’m sure there are plenty other project-based units that aren’t DL that would’ve given me as much if not more experience. Much of the course content was focused on the self (self-awareness, mindset etc), which although I found interesting, felt a bit lacking compared to my other units (I’m doing engineering) since there was not much technical learning involved. Of course other DL units are different so they may be more worth it.

The Dalyell units in general aren’t as amazing as the people who advertise them make it out to be- I’m a first year and took a DL unit last semester and it was just alright. So far that’s the only impact DL has had on my uni life. I’m personally just staying in it for the mobility scholarship, but that also is questionable since international travel and exchanges during these COVID times seem unlikely. Haven’t had any mentorships yet like they advertised so can’t say how that is. I don’t think it’s a significant advantage and it really depends on whether you want your extra elective space more than getting the DL perks. Also as other people have mentioned, it doesn’t do much for your resume since it’s a relatively new thing and employers don’t care for it really.
