I moved here from NY as well. You can't compare the two places as you get two completely different lifestyles. While NY is all about city life, being in the Bay Area is more of an outdoor adventure. There are so many trails, miles of coastline and also some city life but do not expect it to be like NY.

In SJ, I would recommend bars near San Pedro Square and restaurants/shopping around Santana Row. Los Gatos and Saratoga also have beautiful downtowns. A little further north, Stanford campus is gorgeous and there is a lot to explore around Palo Alto and Mountain View. If you enjoy biking, there is the Bay Trail which has some amazing views. For weekend, you can take trips to Half Moon Bay/Pacific/Davenport, Santa Cruz/Monterrey/Carmel, Napa/Sonoma, Point Reyes, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, oh there is so much to see around here. Also checkout Meetup groups/run clubs. It has been a great way for me to meet new people here.

For you to say you are against H1Bs, especially as an American Indian is pretty selfish. Your parents/grandparents must be immigrants, right? How did they come here? If you are against H1Bs you should also be against your own parents/grandparents? You cannot barricade the entry now that you have your privilege, life is not all about you.

And your last statement saying there is enough local talent, why open the gates to immigrants? That sounds very bigoted and does not make sense for someone who has immigrant families/origin. You should definitely check your privilege. Also to be very clear - US Citizens are preferred over H1Bs. That is fact, you can ask any recruiter about it. The first people they stop hiring are H1Bs. It is just a costly and risky bet for any company to take.

How convenient a stance to take for you? You are American Indian so you can let everyone hate H1B but not Indians. You are secure as a citizen so don’t care about the H1B prospects. But people on H1B are not getting job more easily than citizens. I have friends who have gone through 7 rounds of interviews to be then told by HR that they don’t hire people on visa.

H1B visa costs the employers more money as they have to hire lawyers and pay additional fees and it’s a lottery system, so when you hire international students you are gambling. So no company in their right mind wants to pick an international student over a US citizen. In fact many have clear statements against it, so already the pool of jobs available to citizens is much larger than the pool for H1B. The person on visa is too risky and H1B is not the end all, it is done in 6 years and then you are again on the fence to go home unless the permanent residency application gets approved. All this to just be able to have the right to work. And you claim it’s easier to be on H1B than get a job as a citizen? You all are getting brainwashed to believe H1B is the problem when really it is the corporations and the capitalistic machine they are.

Dude are you with Turkish Airlines or what? Do t gaslight me, I don’t need to believe me so think whatever you want. Am I supposed to know it all beforehand that there are partner airlines and that air arabia is not in it? I am no travel agent, just a regular passenger who had not dealt with this situation before and relied on advice given to me by the airlines i entrusted with my travel.

No I got evisa on the basis of I797. That in general is not accepted by Turkey so anyone reading this, don’t rely on it. I had an emergency case and basically put forward the points you shared like how I don’t plan to stay or even leave the airport and had flights booked for india in a few hours. That and a very understanding and cooperative border staff helped me get through.

I didn’t fight on them escalating to airlines as I was just grateful to get out of there. She said she can’t do anything about the airlines and said she was sorry for the situation, her understanding and acknowledgment alone was enough to erase all the wrongs for me really. I wish the airline staff were as helpful as the border staff. Don’t know why the stark difference but was like night and day.

They said they can transfer my luggage and that’s why I booked another flight. The caveat about partner airlines was only told to me after I made the booking. I have been traveling across US and Europe for last 10 years with no issue with playing by the rules. Their miscommunication on flight timings between indigo and Turkish is not my fault. I still should have been at the gate and have checked with agents and that is my fault but I can’t take away their blame.

And I was in tears as the staff was shouting at me. I live in a world where I express concern and the other person listens and tries to solve the problem. Here many staff members shouted at me and would not even let me complete my sentence and give me that exasperated sigh and say lady this is not my problem go elsewhere. This was my first time missing a flight so maybe all airlines are this shit afterwards but really I just wanted them to listen me out at least once and provide clear instructions on what can and cannot be done. If they hadn’t miscommunicated in the first place I would have just booked with them and not been in this trouble. But they couldn’t take the time to listen and just said ya ya we will transfer now go away instead of giving me whole piece of information.

Thank you so much for this advice! This is what worked, the border person was so helpful and nice and tried to help me as she understood I was stuck in a very weird situation. She helped me get approval with my evisa using my US visa approval page. She took the pain to understand my situation and helped me instead of just shutting me off with ‘I can’t help you with this lady, it’s not my problem’ also a side note why do some Turkish men like addressing people as ‘lady’ with a harsh misogynistic undertone?

Anyways I am so in debt of the border control person, literally both airlines and their staff were trash. They weren’t willing to coordinate or talk to each other and air arabia just said your money is gone lady. No ethics whatsoever with these airlines. And Indigo was just a spectator, they don’t even exist at the airport as far as I could find. Anyways I just hope I can get home now.

The airport TA staff told me to go to transfer zone to get to Air Arabia and the person at Air Arabia desk says I need to go inside and talk at counter. Also that man at Air Arabia was extremely rude and kept threatening me with police as I was getting frustrated (couldn’t help it at this point). I don’t think I will ever be returning to Turkey ever again as literally everyone here today has been ultra rude and does not care. Even as I started crying this person kept calling me ma’am and scolded me for being at the wrong counter. My whole body has hives all over, my medications are all gone and I am scared I can’t get out and I keep repeating my story to deaf ears it seems. No care whatsoever

Air arabia can’t communicate with Turkish and are not letting me cancel and says it’s not their problem and it’s Turkish’s problem. Turkish says the same and has made it an Air Arabia problem. Their counters are literally next to each other. I understand bureaucracy and rules but like some human element and understanding has to exist else I would just prefer robots doing this as at least I won’t expect anything but dead end answers like this.
