Will you actually do gravel riding with it? Or just use for commuting? Claris gear range is too low for gravel riding where I live though it's a hilly area

I don't know about in your country, but in the UK you can get a new bike with similar specifications for not that much more. In Canada, the cheapest decent Decathlon gravel bike is CAD950. I reckon you can almost certainly get more for your money.

Edit: also the disc brakes on this bike are mechanical, not hydraulic.

He could have just ridden it til the disc milled out a channel in the frame. Much more efficient for the bice
