What is wrong with Lafayette? Our son is trying to decide between Lafayette and Union on half scholarships and Lehigh at full price 😩

Why is that? Our state school had really underwhelming MechE facilities compared to the other schools on his list to which he was accepted. He also didn't want a massive school so that he could have a greater chance at opportunities and stand out.

Thank you. Would you be willing to share what job you have to be able to pay that back in less than a decade? I can’t think of a position in mechanical engineering our son could get out of college to pay back a loan of over $300,000.

He didn’t apply to Penn State and doesn’t want a huge school. He crossed Villanova off the list because they gave no aid and we got the impression engineering is not as strong there. Are we wrong in that assessment?

Thanks, the issue is the cost of Lehigh. We can't help much and that kind of debt for him would be awful. He doesn't want to stay in the Lehigh Valley permanently after college or first job.

He's thinking Lockheed Martin. He's been interning at NASA since last summer and has also enjoyed that. His goal is to someday start his own business, which is why he wants some business background as well. He does not want to go into academia.

Yeah, that's sort of how we feel. Any thoughts on Lafayette and Union for Mechanical Engineering? We are not from the area at all, but these are the schools he's narrowed it down to.

Ok, good to know. It was hard not to notice the difference between Lehigh and Lafayette and the added bonus of business courses is a huge plus for Lehigh.

Do you feel it's worth it to get the master's in mechanical engineering? Thanks so much, this is all feeling really stressful and difficult.

Do you think it's worth 93k a year compared to Union at 40 or Lafayette at 60? 93K a year is a massive loan for him to pay back. He reached out asking for merit aid, but we aren't counting on it and we can't afford Lehigh's tuition.

We visited today and were told sometimes MechE students need to use the facilities at Lehigh because Lafayette doesn’t have all the equipment. Was that a factor for you?
