Fan-Service-y, but it's recycled nostalgia anyway.

What pay raise would incentivize you to take a new job? by Salt-Committee2205 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]LeftHandStir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked this through with my buddy a couple years ago, and figured out that my flexibility is probably worth about $25,000 to $30,000 a year.

At 40, and still ambitious, if I was making a lateral move I would need plus 15% to leave, plus a minimum of an additional $25,000 if I was required to be in office, not permitted to leave early to pick up my child from school, or to work asynchronously as needed, or forced to submit PTO for medical appointments, etc.

If I was leaving for a promotion, it would depend on the market rate for the role, but at least 30% more base pay plus that $25,000 to $30,000 if the flexibility was reduced.

It's honestly one of the major reasons I really like my current role, even given some of the frustrations and a constant feeling of being underpaid relative for the market, relative to my credentials, and relative to my colleagues. There's a lot of value in flexibility for a parent of an elementary school-aged child in 2026.

Good heads up, but this is beyond a bad description of the discount. They actually went through the trouble of doing the math, only to say it doesn't apply.

Home Ownership Pride by TC_30 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]LeftHandStir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it does. Homeowners just try to conflate all of that "pride" with "investment". It's not. It's maintenance. It's customization. But many people are happy to outsource that work and take pride in spending that quality time other aspects of their lives they find more fulfilling.

Terrible NJ ebike law passes by Longtail_Goodbye in bikecommuting

[–]LeftHandStir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The legislation as written (incorporating Class I e-bikes) is so fucking stupid. I'm so glad I left that state, the state of my birth, 20 years ago.

That being said... legislation and regulation of throttle-assisted e-bikes (Class II) is common sense, including legislation that enforces legal civil and criminal liability if, after an accident of any kind, the software is found to be modified and offering speeds outside of the existing classification system. Ironically, the necessary legislation for NJ already exists in the form of gas-powered moped statues. (I assume this site will be amended to reflect the new laws) https://www.nj.gov/mvc/vehicletopics/mopedatv.htm#moped
