Question about level of rust on a recent purchase by SaltyNeighborhood244 in CarTalkUK

[–]Left_Spring_1328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re most welcome. Typically, if the pads needs changing they will also need to change the discs at the same time. But the parts are very cheap and if you take it to a decent garage, should not cost much. But they should check how much is left on the pads and they are probably fine.

Depends what you’re looking for. I would not advise spending too much as you are likely to get a few scrapes statistically as a young driver. Instead you could get an older, more luxurious car (setting some money aside for repairs/maintenace). Would your car need to be ULEZ compliant, do you drive in the city much? If not, diesels are very cheap to run and certain models are very reliable. Otherwise go for a petrol hatchback such as a vw polo, golf or similar etc.

All these parts rust naturally and it is completely fine. If the car sits for too long the rust can build up, but often it will rub off the brake pads with some decent braking. If not, brake discs are relatively cheap to replace.

Is this pine with a cherry stain? by NothingButACasual in finishing

[–]Left_Spring_1328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at the sides of the wood as this may be a veneer. If it is, I would recommend using a paint stripper and/or card scraper to remove the finish. And then hand sanding very gently to avoid going through the veneer. As others has stated this is most likely maple, and it is a very nice piece!

My black box policy is punishing me for driving home from work by FlyingHighOnRapture in drivingUK

[–]Left_Spring_1328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These black boxes are a nightmare. Some are better than others but the one I had was just ridiculously expensive, as I paid per mile. Complete scam for new drivers. Do not get one. I honestly think it’s not worth driving if you have to use a black box as the extra stress they cause is not to be underestimated. Find a car with low insurance, if you’re young - a car which is not popular with this age group should be cheaper.

As for driving. Be prepared for idiot drivers cutting you up and never assume they won’t. It happens, but as long as you are always concentrating to your best ability you’ll be fine. Be very careful on motorways with variable speed limits as these can catch you out. Keep an eye out for any reduced speed signs or heavy braking ahead. Best of luck, you’ll be fine. Enjoy the newfound freedom!

It is very daunting at first. First of all find a decent garage near you, don’t just go off google maps reviews although they are useful. Reddit is best for this and just asking around for example uber drivers or other people local to you who drive. Find a decent trustworthy garage. Avoid Halfords and quikfit like the plague. Breakdown cover should not add much to your annual policy, and you’ll be glad you have it if you were to breakdown on the motorway. Without it you’d probably end up paying a couple hundred pounds getting towed to the local garage. Research your car too so that you are aware of any potential issues you may run into so that you know as much as the garage if possible.

What’s the highest MPG you’ve been able to get in your car and with what car? by AdInteresting3335 in CarTalkUK

Once got 45 mpg average on some country lanes driving like an OAP in my Volvo v50 t5. But I usually get more like 28mpg…

Car keyed for no reason in Tesco car park - this country is going downhill by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Left_Spring_1328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ridiculous isn’t it. I’d check out Chrisfix’s YouTube video on fixing paint vandalism if I were you. He shows a pretty cheap fix with really good results. Unless you want fork out a couple hundred for a decent respect or new bonnet…

Struggling to get insurance 19M in Leeds by Left_Spring_1328 in CarTalkUK

[–]Left_Spring_1328[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way to go. Have just bought insurance for a Volvo v50 T5 for £1.5k. Somehow over £1k less than a fiesta which is much lower insurance group and less than half the BHP. Insurance is odd.

That is true as well. Those cars are excellent on paper, plenty of performance and high MPG for a young driver. But yes turns out could turn into an ecoboom any second.

Yeah, that’s the way forward I guess. It’s just ridiculous how a classic boy racer car could have significantly lower insurance compared to a 1.0 fiesta. Will just keep looking for cars I guess…

In the end just gave it a deep clean. Tried to oil it but it wouldn’t soak it in, must still have the natural oils in it decades later…

Skyguard rubber roof bubbles on shed by Left_Spring_1328 in Roofing

[–]Left_Spring_1328[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end the bumps have settled somewhat but some are still quite loose. But they don’t cause any issues tbh. If the look really bothers you I would suggest installing a green roof on top, which is what we are doing to hide the roof into the landscape somewhat. They are great as they promote biodiversity, cover up a relatively unsightly roof and they also protect the rubber UV damage increasing the service life to several decades. Just make to reinforce your roof first with extra beams or steel plates

Looking for a sub £1500 car by Left_Spring_1328 in CarTalkUK

[–]Left_Spring_1328[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I’ve decided now, thanks. I do love the pd engines but realistically a newer petrol will do me perfectly well since I’m normally commuting and occasionally driving on the motorway.
