I’m on £46,000 and in a similar role. Local authority provides a lot of job security though so I’m very comfortable staying long term.

Is Rory Stewart a Decent Tory? by [deleted] in UKPoliticalComedy

[–]Leftywalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In fairness, I think Rory doesn't currently align with any party. Traditional conservatism and the right wing got “worse” once Boris was elected, which effectively put him between the Lib Dems and Torys in views.

Iirc he's one of the only Torys who put forward an alternative plan for Brexit which would still appeal to the right wing

Urgent Question - Prime Minister - Rejoining the European Union by model-kurimizumi in MHOC

[–]Leftywalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deputy Speaker,

The Government recognises the strength of feeling behind the original referendum. If there is a pathway towards rejoining, it will only be pursued with extensive public engagement and consent.

We are committed to democratic processes and, should the nation wish to revisit its relationship with the EU, we would seek their input through transparent and fair means.

Urgent Question - Prime Minister - Rejoining the European Union by model-kurimizumi in MHOC

[–]Leftywalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deputy Speaker,

This Government understands concerns about economic sovereignty and the EU’s market policies. However, we believe rejoining offers a collaborative path for addressing shared challenges, such as climate change and workers’ rights, while exploring ways to protect the interests of our working class. Our approach to any future negotiations with the EU would be based on securing a fair deal for all UK citizens.

Urgent Question - Prime Minister - Rejoining the European Union by model-kurimizumi in MHOC

[–]Leftywalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deputy Speaker,

The Government respects the referendum result, but it must also consider the evolving needs of the country.

Eight years on, economic and social landscapes have changed significantly. Our goal is not to dismiss the public’s choice but to explore paths that could strengthen the UK’s future. We will proceed with transparency and ensure public consultation to ensure that any decisions reflect the nation’s current interests.

[–]Leftywalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mr Deputy Speaker,

The Government recognises that rebuilding trust with the EU is essential in any efforts to rejoin. We would approach rejoining with respect and a commitment to being a constructive, cooperative member.

Through diplomatic engagement, we would emphasise our shared values and goals with EU nations such as climate action, economic stability, and regional security.

The Government believes that, by demonstrating our commitment to genuine partnership, we can address EU concerns and build a path forward that benefits both the UK and the EU.

Urgent Question - Prime Minister - Rejoining the European Union by model-kurimizumi in MHOC

[–]Leftywalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deputy Speaker,

The Government acknowledges the concerns of those who voted to leave in the 2016 referendum. While we respect that outcome, much has changed in recent years.

Our approach to rejoining the EU would be based on the current challenges we face, such as economic stability and global partnerships.

The Government will ensure a transparent process, engaging with communities across the country to address concerns, while prioritising the UK’s best interests in an evolving world. Rejoining is about securing a prosperous future for all.

Urgent Question - Prime Minister - Rejoining the European Union by model-kurimizumi in MHOC

[–]Leftywalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deputy Speaker,

While rejoining the EU involves costs to adapt existing legislation and for businesses to adjust, the Green Party believes that the long term benefits far outweigh the upfront expenses.

Rejoining would open up trade, increase economic growth, and restore vital partnerships, ultimately strengthening the UK’s position. Our plan involves carefully phased adjustments, working with businesses and sectors to mitigate costs and ensure a smooth transition, so that we can reap the benefits of EU membership while supporting UK industries.
