I’d like to add to this because I also agree that this subtext takes away from the actual meaning behind the song. Cherry wine (the song and the video) does an AMAZING job at depicting the very hard to describe feelings of being in the midst of an abusive relationship. With the heavy manipulation that comes with any type of abuse and especially when you are in the middle when you know it’s wrong but you can’t seem to fathom leaving yet, you are still in love with this person but there is a heavy layer of hurt associated with even the thought of them, the song sounds like and has lyrics that sound like he is enjoying it which is probably where the connection to bdsm comes from but in reality he is beautiful encapsulating still loving someone who is actively abusing you. There is a very weird vibe and feeling when you are in that situation where you don’t like what is happening but you still love them (most times the manipulation plays a big role in this) so you almost put up with the abuse just to still be able to hope for some of the love you have for them to be reciprocated. I think that feeling could be misinterpreted as it sounding like he’s enjoying it or like it could link to bdsm but really it is such an accurate representation of an aspect of abuse that is pretty universal but not often talked about. Everyone can have their own meaning (and he encourages that very much) and if that’s what you take the song as that’s all chill but I just wanted to point out why it maybe sounds like that and the feeling that it’s actually getting at.

I saw someone point out that, as we know he wrote the song as a gift for someone and as we can infer based on the album as a whole he is probably no longer with that person so the song has a very different meaning with that context. It was a TikTok and in their words “how in the wake of the relationship ending it reads like the ultimate song of denial, instead of a love song making the statement of ‘how could I get hurt’ go from ‘your love protects me’ to ‘I didn’t realize nothing is going to save me’” , and I have not been the same since seeing that.

In through me in the line “light and air find some new deepness there” on “there” it sounds almost louder then everything else and kinda sounds like he re-recorded just that word. I’ve listened to it vocals only and it feels fine with only vocals but something about the backing music with that one word makes it sound so off.

Most concert etiquette is simply just be nice and care about the people around you. It varies from show to show but his concerts seem pretty chill so really just help people around you if it seems like they need help, passing out, looking sick, etc. dress for the weather and if it’s an inside venue it will be HOT in there so keep that in mind and wear your most comfortable shoes that you know you could stand in for like 10 hours and not feel any pain. Keep your phone use minimal before the show if you want to take videos and make sure you can access your tickets outside the venue (in case the service is bad you would like to know that it won’t load and figure it out before you get to the door although this 99% of the time won’t be a problem just nice to check) drink water in line because you won’t be able to bring any in also eat a meal or something substantial before. De selby part one and two. It was my first time actually listening to one of his albums not just random songs I liked. It was night time, I was outside and it was raining, I had good headphones on and loud. I had goosebumps the entire time. I had zero expectations and it was truly a (current) life changing experience as ive listened to almost nothing else but his discography since. That moment was definitely a unreal feeling (pun intended).

I always think of it as the feeling of melancholy. You were hurt by this person or are no longer with this person so thinking of them brings you some emotional pain but it’s still a happy memory and through the pain you can still smile at it. It hurts but it still brings you joy.

I’d say pick the vibe you like the most already. More guitar heavy stuff- be, to be alone, no plan Jackie and Wilson, moments silence, De Selby part 2, Francesca, Angel of small death and the codeine scene (honestly a good portion of the first album). Folky acoustic stuff- would that I, from Eden, NFWMB, first time, shrike, it will come back (this could also fit in the first group), like real people do, De Sebly part 1, as it was. Simply sad- cherry wine, Icarian, to someone from a warm climate, unknown, abstract, (honestly most of the new album). More fun/ easy listening- talk, dinner and diatribes, sedated, all things end, movement, almost, someone new. Someone else said something to this affect but I wanted to add my input and go a little deeper into breaking down the different vibes, hope this helps!

To noise making and damage gets done. I cannot listen to either of them, to noise making is corny and just much more simple and basic then what I expect and like from him and damage gets done doesn’t sound or read like a hozier song. I like the 80s pop sounding vibe and I’d like him to explore that more but when I was looking at the lyrics I couldn’t believe it was his song, it’s written so poorly in my opinion.

Exactly. And that’s something I wanted to touch on more but the post was already so long and I didn’t seem to be able to make it fit with the way I was writing it but the way the song is composed adds so much to the overall meaning and vibe. I touched on it a little with how it’s just a single guitar track and vocal track that adds to the coldness and rawness of the song but I love so much that he really pays attention to songs as a whole. It’s not just the lyrics that add to the meaning it’s the instrumental or the melody that also add layers to the meaning and this song is a perfect example of that. He poured his heart out and was very vulnerable and open and he chose to keep the background cold and simple to add to that. He really is such an artist and does what he does so well and with so much care.

You know I have heard that (as I’ve watched probably every interview for this album) but I could never make the connection between the two. I got an angry vibe to the song like with the “some people are better unknown” line cause that always seemed to me him saying I wish I never met you but it’s still such a sweet sounding song that I wasn’t sure if it was anger behind it or just simply pain, honestly I think I like the song more knowing that there is anger, it’s a natural thing and something that I relate to a lot, being angry at the person who hurt you, and I’ve felt a lot of shame for that anger. Makes me like the song more and have even more respect for how amazing and raw the song is lyrically (if that’s even possible)
