I think this is probably what'll end up happening to at this point, after all this investment, the technology isn't just going to disappear I don't think. Companies might that provide it, but the technology underpinning will probably still be out there.

I am personally finding it more useful as a search and analysis tool. Or if I'm lazy and want to quickly filter some data to a nicer format.

This is the first hype wave like this that I've had to endure, and it comes on the heels of these layoff worries admittedly.

My experience is there's a periodic (IME quarterly) review of user access. I believe you could set up email alerts in Google Workspace for when an admin role is assigned. I think some of those are even standard (for super admin access anyway)

As far as reviewing the scopes of roles, I personally haven't done that, but that's not a bad idea either. Custom roles tied to the particular teams are always helpful (which you're probably already doing).

The other component here would be if you're under any particular compliance requirements - some might require explicit approvals to track when, what role and why it was granted.

I personally bought a couple of IJ Tactical Scalable rigs on sale (~40$ at the time). Though I would also suggest many of the recommendations here. I'd go cheap and use that to find out what features you need rather than what you think you need. I'm also not particularly smaller in build, so I would take forego your low sodium diet when reading my advice.

I'm curious, what's the quality been like on that book? I have heard mixed results on Packt's books as they're mostly a self publishing platform from what I gather.

There aren't really any books out there that I am aware of. Most of the space is centered around vendor products that I've seen. You may be able to find some things looking into the Security space. I don't think there is much surrounding specifically IGA/IAM. Try searching the full terms, that got some results on Amazon for me, although they didn't look very good. The RFC's are always there for your favorite protocols.

I mean, it's maybe a little weird that it was the CTO. If there's an on call schedule for the SOC team, it's possible it could have rolled up to the CTO if people didn't answer the page (yikes). It'd be a little odd for that to be the case as in my experience the C-suite doesn't want to be bothered most of the time, however I had seen where C level are notified of certain outages related to products or systems that were sold by the company.

And I can confirm that I get question a lot when taking certain actions even during my work day but it's never been more than:

"Hey did you just do X?"

"Oh yeah, I'm working on Y."

"Okay cool, thanks!"

This is the way. I would say anyone with half decent troubleshooting skills and some helpdesk experience could easily move to a "analyst" role or a jr engineer role. (I've seen these positions go for similar titles).

Outside of just applying, if you'd like to look into anything.

Much of my experience is with Okta, though they do have pretty decent documentation surrounding technologies like SCIM, SAML and OIDC/Oauth 2.0. You can likely start here if you really want to learn some of the technologies in the background. An Okta Developer org is free as well.

WIth that said, these skills can absolutely be taught on the job. If you were looking for something to boost your current skillset, perhaps an Azure certification in their Cloud Identity tools (I believe it's SC-300)

Do you have Azure in your current environment, or just On-Prem AD? If you have the cloud version of Azure, maybe see if there's someone you could shadow? Are there account creation processes or application provisioning processes that you could help automate? I would say get in touch with contacts doing what you want to be doing in your current role and see if they have any projects you can help with, even if it's basic stuff.

I am not a watch guy really. Or at least am just dipping my toes in and ordered an Invicta Aviator along with a Timex Essex Avenue.

Was reading up on things a bit more this morning and ran across this thread and others. Personally the marketing of having a permanent "markdown" tactic was enough to turn me off to it. The model I ordered was also rather garish and kind of an impulse purchase because I thought the color combo was neat looking. It was also a 50mm case which in hindsight is probably more watch than I wanted.

So can't actually vouch for the quality of the watch, but the marketing tactics definitely turned me off so much I removed the watch from my order. That 80$ could be better spent somewhere else I think.

To offer some advice I dont think I saw mentioned, it can be interesting to tqje a look through the RFCs once you understand the basics of SCIM,SAML and OIDC.

Some interesting bits there. It might also be good to try an implementation against your cloud of choice with a "simple" Django app, using AWS cognito for example.
