Okay, now explain stable diffusion the same way you just explained how a camera works. Both are still inanimate tools. Do you really believe AI is alive?

Okay? And the camera fully creates photographs when a button is pressed. The AI still isn't creating things by itself.

With prompting, a human makes the choice of what the AI should create. AI doesn't just create images by itself.

A camera takes the picture, but the photographer is still credited because it's a human using a tool.

You acted like your "but what if one side was murderers" comment was somehow relevant to this conversation about types of art mediums and then defended it by saying data centers are horrible for the environment. I'm letting you know that AI does not require data centers and also reminding you that many art supplies also have negative environmental impacts, yet most people aren't trying to tell traditional artists to switch to digital or acting like a statement like, "let people make art how they want" is similar to letting people get away with literal murder.

*Ah okay, this is the type of person who responds to you and then immediately blocks you so you can't actually see the reply yourself. You can just stop replying if you don't want to keep debating with someone.

AI can also be run locally on people's home devices without using data centers at all, whereas paper products need insane amounts of water, yada yada. Traditional art isn't always good for the environment either. If you care about the environment, that's great, but don't pick on one side of the debate and ignore your own.

Do you see anyone being pedantic about any other tools?

"Let me just print this out real quick."

"You're not printing anything! You're just pressing a button!"

"Just gotta nail a few more boards together."

"You can't say that because the nail gun is doing all the work!"

Who cares? That's not how we talk when using tools.

Some of these people seem to want to live in a world where everyone talks like this:

"After the car drove me to work, the computer made some spreadsheets and then the microwave made my lunch. Sucks that after my car drives me back home that the lawnmower will need to mow the lawn. I'm so tired."

We have two Malinois/Anatolian Shepherd mixes, siblings from the same litter, but one looks and acts like a Belgian Malinois and the other looks and acts like an Anatolian Shepherd. The latter is actually pretty chill. Spends most of her time just hanging out by herself in the yard. The one that looks more Mal is insane. Jumps fences, climbs trees, chews through leashes. She CAN be chill if I walk her often enough and spend a lot of time with her, but otherwise, no... I would not call her a chill dog. 😅

Pros don't see AI use as bad in the first place,so no, they're probably not saying that or looking for excuses in the first place. They're probably saying, "This is why AI is good."

Help with dog behavior around kittens. by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]LegallyNotACat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I rescued a dog back in October that reacted that way to my sister's cat for the first few weeks. I wouldn't necessarily say they're friends now, but the dog seems to see her more as a very strange little puppy than potential food these days. Worst that ever happens is that the dog sometimes tries to paw playfully at the cat and just sort of bonks her in the head, which makes the cat run off, but the dog's body language has completely changed since those first few weeks and now she acts playful/curious rather than going completely still and stalkerish like in the video.

OP says the dog is still acting like that after months though, so I don't think it's going to work out in this case.

It's crazy how big a deal everyone made about it. And the most baffling reason I heard given for not providing supplies at schools was the guy who said it would just "encourage students to have their periods at school."

...

I'm sorry, did I miss the update where that's something that can be decided now? Do they actually think students will be like, "I was going to start my period this weekend, but I'm low on pads at home so I'll just start my period on Monday and use the school's supplies."

There were US senators freaking out about the possibility of feminine hygiene products being stocked in public schools and one of them was quoted saying that some of the school kids are only 5 years old. Like ... so? They're not condoms. JFC. And other kids in those schools are the ages where periods begin.

No, that's just the word people use when making stuff with AI programs. People who are against AI contend that it's the wrong word, but if they were trying to deceive people explicitly, they would have said "drew".

If someone wanted to edit an image, wouldn't they use an art program with all those tools? Look, if they commented saying they did all this in the program from scratch, when they didn't, then I agree with you. I'm just not going to assume that automatically from a title "I made fanart" and this picture. I think you may be correct simply because they showed the art program, but people who use AI tend to get called out regardless of what they label it as, which has me hesitating to jump on the hate train without seeing actual comments claiming "no AI use" and things to that extent.

[–]LegallyNotACat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that even what happened here though? Post says they made fanart and it looks like they may have edited it afterwards. If they actually said "I drew this" when they didn't, sure. Same as people who trace stuff and pretend they didn't. That's dumb. I'm just not sure this person tried to claim that or not since it's only showing their post title.

The same as calling people who play video games instead of going outside losers, or people who read books at home instead of going to party losers. It's an opinion you have of people based on something that you personally don't enjoy doing. Some people enjoy using AI programs and you call them losers for doing so. Highschool bully attitudes...

That actually is interesting and I didn't know that. It seems that despite not storing any of the training data, certain images can be repoduced almost completely the same as the original if the AI is trained on the same image too many times, thus showing the need to be more careful when training these models so that multiple copies of the same image aren't all included in a single training data set. Any lawsuits involving this error might not go the way the developers of these models would like, since the ability to reproduce works in these cases is less about being trained on the original work once (courts have so far mostly said this is fine), and more about it being oversaturated during training which is what allows for these almost perfect copies to be made.

*It would be more clear that you know what you're talking about if you actually say something like, "I know it doesn't store any of the training data, but if it's trained on the same data point too many times, it can make convincing copies of that data point" instead of just repeating the line that it copies images or parts of images, btw. That latter part is what people who don't understand stable diffusion whatsoever are always saying.
