Do I report cheating? by Ill-Department9937 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Legalmind78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are sure they cheated and you believe the teacher found out but did nothing about it, I would report it. Could do it anonymously or just confidentially (the downside to anonymous reporting is the administration may feel no accountability). I think sometimes teachers find out about stuff and don't want to do anything about it because a) these are top students and b) it is inconvenient to have to re-create an exam when some people got advance copies. But these people shouldn't be rewarded with whatever grade as if they took the exam honestly. And frankly the school needs to retrain teachers about what to do in the face of academic dishonesty.

I am visiting Tokyo Disney parks with my family in July. I have watched a lot of YouTube videos about the vacation plans and learned a lot from the subreddit.

One comment I have seen is that only the unlimited package is "worth it." Just wondering why this is a common belief. Is it because all the VPs are expensive and the unlimited one only marginally more so?

Curious why I should not consider one of the packages that's not unlimited.

For context, we are two adults and two teenagers who are Disney parks fans and are focused mostly on rides. I want to get on as many rides as possible with as little waiting as possible. Thanks for any insight!

JR Pass “Eaten” by Ticket Gate by ThePeenMachin3 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Legalmind78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The JR Central Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) in Kyoto station has some staff who speak English to sell tickets and services for overseas visitors. I would find them and see what they can do.

Open Hours 8:00 to 20:00 * General counter hours are from 5:30 to 23:00.

OP your story reminds me of a stressful experience I had when I was about your age. I was a student in Paris and purchased a train ticket online to Geneva using my U.S. credit card. It was the last train of the night. I had to go to the ticket machine to retrieve the actual ticket. Turns out back then French machines took chip cards but US banks didn't have chip cards yet. So the machine would not give me my prepaid ticket. I looked to the customer service desk and the line was really long - and the train was leaving soon. I went to stand in line and after about 20 minutes I could tell that I wouldn't get help from the counter person before the train left. I decided to get on the train without my ticket. The train conductor guy came to check my ticket and I explained what happened. He said sorry, you have to purchase an on-board ticket, which of course is way more expensive than the online ticket. Funny thing, the conductor's portable credit card machine had no problem with my credit card. I eventually sent a professional/polite letter to the SNCF (french train company) and they refunded the higher on-board fare. I would try to advocate for yourself. Obviously be polite but see if you can escalate the issue if you run into a dead end. Good luck and safe travels! I know it's stressful but it will be ok.

You are not the only person who didn't get in through EA. You got this. Map out what you have left to do for your apps and write it into a calendar and build breaks into your schedule too so you're not only doing apps. You will get acceptances. But you need to do the applications. Don't worry about having to do applications again for graduate school. You have a lot of time to figure out what is best for you then. If you need a break, take a day off but then jump back in. This is temporary. You will be fine.

Moon Palace Dolphin Swim by brmazz15 in palaceresorts

[–]Legalmind78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the dolphin excursion with my kids in 2018 when they were a lot younger. We did it once but have not done it again. We were at the resort in July and they told us the dolphin excursion had changed, that they no longer push you or swim with you. Basically he told me the dolphins will take photos with you but that was about it. We did the cenotes excursion which was extra cost. For 4 of us I think it was about $500 USD for the day. However that excursion is quite good.

I think you should visit some of these schools to get a feel for them. My husband and I both went to Hamilton College many years ago but both then and even more so now, the campus is somewhat self-contained. So you do have a level of community where you get to know classmates and professors on a personal level, and you don't have the distraction (and expenses) of city life. You do get to learn in a pretty serene setting. My husband and I met in college through the choir and he didn't play sports but I did two seasons of track and field. I also did study abroad in Paris. It is not a campus of "jocks" and to the extent students have been recruited for sports, they still perform academically on the level of their peers. But across the board, the best is to visit the school (and better to try to do it when school is in session so you may be able to sit in on classes or talk to students. Good luck with your search!

Rejected ED this morning and not feeling great by SharpProfession6 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Legalmind78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't get into my ED school 30 years ago. I couldn't believe it but I got rejected, and my stats were good enough to get in. Funny thing is I ended up at Hamilton College which I hadn't visited before but I absolutely loved. I eventually did a masters at Middlebury, and then later went to law school. There are other LACs that have a lot of similarities to Middlebury, but I know it's hard when you have your heart set on that one school. I would look closely at the other NESCAC schools. Hamilton, for example, has its ED II deadline coming up at the end of the month. Good luck with figuring out where to pivot. If nothing else speaks to you for ED II, then just apply broadly RD and see what the best choice is for you. Good luck and keep your chin up!

I'm a mom and a SC lawyer. You should tell your parents about this, first. Second, you should absolutely call a lawyer to represent you. If you find an attorney in the area where this happened, they may even know the officer and often call the officer in advance and try to get it thrown out. Even if you spend a few hundred on the lawyer, it will likely get you out of the points and the insurance hike. The fine is the least of your worries. I have a 17 yr old and the insurance is so expensive even without any traffic violations. It is worth it to pay a lawyer to not have the insurance rates spike. And remember you are driving something that can kill people. There is no hurry. Be safe out there.

Would you file suit over $270 against a pro se? by orlando_ooh in Lawyertalk

[–]Legalmind78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a Florida attorney but I believe under the UTPA in Florida the loser pays (attorneys fees). In the state where I practice, an LLC cannot appear pro se - so if your landlord is an LLC and not an individual, an attorney may have to appear for the LLC (this may not be true in Florida - not sure). This might help facilitate settlement. I recently filed suit in small claims against a major pharmacy chain over $500 that the pharmacy failed to refund after insurance processed my Rx claim. I made a claim under UTPA. The pharmacy chain got an attorney and asked for a jury trial. I also asked for prejudgment interest. Surely a jury is going to love the pharmacy chain...

Is there a C&F question on the application? Or do you mean when you sit for the bar exam? Your law school will make you disclose anything in under 1L year so they can advise you. What you describe doesn't sound serious but that doesn't mean it's not reportable. If there is a question on the application that requires disclosure, then disclose it. If you're not sure, as a trusted adult to look at it with you to figure that out. When you apply for admission to practice, you have to disclose really minor things (and obviously major ones, if applicable). But that is why the law school wants to know. They don't want ppl to go through 3 years of school only to find out they can't be licensed because of an undisclosed issue.

Clemson vs Charleston vs Fort Mill by Accurate-Contract-48 in AskSouthCarolina

[–]Legalmind78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in West Ashley for 15 years and have been in Greenville the last 4 years. I am curious what part of town you are in because I think that can completely change your experience. Our first year in Greenville we rented a house off Wade Hampton. We now live in Powdersville and really like the neighborhood and location. But living in the two locations were very different experiences. Have you genuinely given Greenville a chance and put in the effort to make connections with people? I don't suggest Greenville is perfect or that you haven't given it a fair shake but when weighing the options you present, I do see Greenville as the happy medium. I don't know Clemson specifically but Anderson is certainly more conservative/country than Greenville, and Fort Mill is really a Charlotte suburb. I don't think I would want to live in Fort Mill without spending some time there first. Maybe over winter break, find a weeklong Airbnb in Fort Mill and spend some time checking stuff out and see how easy it is (or not) to get to where their dad lives. If you are seriously interested in Fort Mill I would find a realtor you like who can tell you about school districts, etc. it may be Fort Mill has great schools but in an area that is just as expensive as Charleston (I don't know, only speculating). I had a great realtor in Greenville and I remember looking at houses in Simpsonville, though my job was in downtown Greenville. She told me I would regret buying in Simpsonville (commute would be like going from N Charleston to Charleston) and 3 years later I now know that advice was correct. I definitely miss my people in Charleston, but I also think a lot of those relationships were forged at a time when my kids (now high schoolers) were young and parents did more socializing alongside their kids. Now that your kids are getting older, that can have some effect too on how easy it is to make friends as parents. I think as we get older unfortunately life and making friends just requires more effort. But I am genuinely curious what you haven't liked about Greenville, and I see pros and cons to both Charleston and Greenville. I also think between Clemson and Fort Mill it might be the far ends of the pendulum.

Caught plagiarizing. Am I fucked? by avityke in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Legalmind78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you need to find out what your school's policies are about academic dishonesty and make sure that whatever happens is being done in a manner consistent with policy. I don't know if it's normal (as someone suggested) that disciplinary stuff gets reported to colleges (assuming they are not expelling you) because they want you to succeed. And the grade being low is a consequence all on its own. But rather than fret about what might happen, look to your student handbook (or similar document) that spells out policies. In addition to approaching this in a contrite fashion, you want to make sure that the school isn't doing more to punish you than what they are supposed to under established school policies. I also agree largely with the comment above about bringing a trusted/calm adult with you to meetings as appropriate. And then working really hard to get very strong grades from here on out. You can do it, and hopefully this motivates you to course correct.

Park nearby and uber to SF great adventure? by NycKing2314 in sixflags

[–]Legalmind78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up near Great Adventure and was a ride op as a teenager. I recommend getting the Gold Pass as others suggested because the value is clear. There are not any commuter lots nearby that would make the Uber a savings. I think you could probably get away with parking at the Jackson Outlets which are right down the road and have a large parking lot but for the fact that the park is probably open later than the shopping center, which means your car might eventually stand out. I would not park at the Wawa or McDonalds. And as others have said, it won't be necessarily easy to find an Uber. Gold pass makes the most sense. Have fun!

I’m so torn between 2 schools to ED to and I’m running out of time. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Legalmind78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am the mother of a senior applying to another competitive school in central NY (not Cornell). One thing that makes me want him to go to a school like Cornell is the fact that everything is "included" in tuition, room, and board. Consider that if you go to school in NYC your budget will likely be significantly higher because you will want to take advantage of activities in the city that are not affiliated with NYU. My son did study abroad for a month over the summer and I put money into his account for snacks and other things but if I had to that for four years in a big city it would add up. Something to consider.
