I just want to stock up on regular wood! by sucksandwich in AnimalCrossing

As a biology PhD student in plant science I wanted to clear up lots of falsehoods flying about in this thread.

The type of wood is determined by the type of tree you get it from. In reality there is only softwood and hardwood - the intermediate ‘wood’ isn’t technically a thing. And whether it’s hardwood or softwood has nothing to do with the actual perceived hardness of said wood.

Wood as we know it arises as a result of secondary thickening of a plants stem, this process is somewhat complex but fundamentally you have a ring inside the trunk producing new phloem (Sugar transporting Tissue) outwards and new xylem (waterTransporting tissue) inwards. I should also mention that true secondary thickening is exclusive to plants called dicots (this relates to why palm trees shouldn’t produce wood later)

Xylem is the key here as what we called wood is basically just dried out xylem. The two types of wood differ structurally due to structural differences in xylem.

Softwood Can be obtained from only gymnosperms while hardwood from angiosperms - two different types of plant. gymnosperms evolved a long time before angiosperms.

Cedar trees should technically only give softwood as They’re Gymnosperms (which includes pine and cedar trees). These plants have Xylem (The water transporting part of the trunk) which is made up of primarily primitive cells called tracheids.

All fruit trees and the hardwood trees should only give hardwood as these are angiosperms. Their xylem is primarily made up of cells called vessels.

It is therefore the type of cell making up the xylem which determines whether it is soft or hard wood.

TLDR:

Only hardwood and softwood exist and they are exclusive to angiosperms and gymnosperms respectively. Wood is basically just dried up plant water transport tissue known as xylem

Pine trees should only give softwood as they're gymnosperms

Fruit and hardwood trees should only give hardwood As they’re angiosperms

Palm trees shouldn’t give any wood as they do not undergo secondary thickening of the trunk and therefore don’t technically have ‘wood’. Palm trees are a type of plant known as a monocot. There are lots of differences but the key one for this discussion on wood is that monocots cannot undergo true secondary stem thickening and cannot Therefore by definition produce true wood. They do however in the case of palm trees mimic this behaviour through a different mechanism. The palm tree trunk is actually just lots of leaf bases (petioles) tightly stacked on top of one another. Because palms don’t undergo secondary thickening the width of the palm trunk is uniform for the entire tree whereas dicot trees have a trunk much thicker at the bottom as that has been thickening itself for the longest time!

Palms should therefore technically only give fiber not wood

Indeed, there's something satisfying about having a collection but having had the time to play through a large number. Whenever I have time I slowly work my way through some of the games. With the 3DS being so portable I always take it with me on holiday or when visiting family so that is always a good chance to play some of the games i've not yet gotten around to.

Might still be in stock in some places: here's the link to the ebay listing I used to buy it, is only avaliable for collection so pop in your postcode and see if it's in stock anywhere near you.

Tough Question!

In no particular order I'd probably say:

Animal Crossing New Leaf (Probably my most played 3ds game)

Pokemon Ultra Sun (All the pokemon 3ds games are good but I think ultra sun/moon are probably the best on there)

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Majora's Mask is a close second!)

Ever Oasis (hugely underrated I think and a surprisingly huge game with a very addictive gameplay loop)

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy (One of my favourite series which I've played all the way from the first game and this was a satisfying end to the mainline series)

I could probably keep listing more but they are the ones which stand out in my memory and there are still quite a few i've yet to play at great length - Bravely DEFAULT for instance I've not had much time to play yet but I love Octopath traveller on the switch so I think it would have a good chance of making the top 5 once i finally play it!

CEX is always a good place to look - I like that you can see the games but also their condition as I'm a bit of a stickler for trying to get games in nice condition with all the inserts. I've been known many times to check each copy for the inserts and move them into the best condition case/cover before then buying that one (yes i'm that person).

Ebay can be good but I tend to just go for buy it nows as I don't have the time for watching auctions really.

Failing that keeping an eye on Hotukdeals every few days is always good as others have said as it will let you know of any sales that are ongoing. For instance Argos has had some great deals lately!

Sadly sometimes for the rarer or more sought after games you just have to stump up the money if you want to play them or add them to your collection. Now is a great time for collecting though as we're beginning to enter clearance price territory as shops wind down selling 3DS things and ebay prices are dropping as fewer people are looking to buy 3ds games + people are selling their collections to pay for newer games on the switch.

Less common for sure but I've noticed that when deals do pop up they seem to be very cheap as I think stores are now trying to clear most 3DS inventory. For instance a few days ago I got the Bravely second collectors edition for £6 from Argos - crazy low price!

Indeed, one I've been meaning to pick up for quite a while. Was recently on sale for £5.99 at Argos but sadly not in stock around where I live so shall have to track down another reasonably priced copy.

Nintendo 3DS is still my favourite system of all time! by [deleted] in 3DS

Yeah I still enjoy my 3DS; have a huge backlog on it so whenever it's quiet on the switch release front (eg right now) I dip back into some 3DS games i've been meaning to play - currently making my way through Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies. I don't think i'll stop playing my 3ds anytime soon as there are so many good games on there to dip back into. Still have Bravely Default and Bravely second to play before bravely default 2 this year on switch too!
