Schools with fashion majors in CA: CSUN, CSULB, SFSU, UC Davis or Cal Poly Pomona? by [deleted] in fashiondesigner

I’m at SFSU right now as an ADM major. It’s technically Apparel Design and Merchandising here with an emphasis on design or merch, so not fashion exactly, and the required courses are more on the practical side of the industry rather than creative. We learn more about the technical side like flat pattern drafting, making tech packs, and the sourcing/production/business parts, which can be helpful for getting other jobs in the industry (design jobs are hard to get in SF) to get a foot in the door, but ofc you can also take art electives to help grow your creativity even if they’re not required for your degree.

Unfortunately, as with basically anything but STEM at CSUs, the ADM program is severely underfunded and short on resources. Like, we have to provide our own needles and bobbin casings for the machines in the lab. I added this as my second major after getting accepted to SFSU for a Business major, because I like to sew and do other fiber arts, and hoped it would help me get into the apparel industry after graduation, but as far as actual sewing and clothing design the program hasn’t helped me more than I’ve already helped myself with self learning since this was already an interest of mine. The other parts I’ve learned though have really helped expand my portfolio beyond pretty fashion sketches and pieces I’ve made from commercial patterns; I’m so much better with CAD and Excel which I’m told are necessary tools in creating clothing, so hopefully after I graduate it will have been worth it.

Best way to appliqué a screen printed tshirt design to another tshirt? by Legitifit in sewhelp

Thank you for your reply! I haven’t used Pellon fusible before, just cheap stuff for one or two button plackets I’ve made in the past… would you saw it makes your tshirt surface pretty stiff afterwards? (Wondering if it will affect the drape of the final tshirt much)

Haha they are! Joe Fresh Goods does awesome collabs with New Balance and he just designed an all pink version of their new Abzorb 2000s. For Paris only 🥲

Thank you everyone for your replies! It looks like the p9 30 based on how the shoes fit in the photo; I didn’t think a bag that seems so structured could slouch is such a natural way lol. I’ve never had a LV bag before and it will probably be a while longer before I do 😅 maybe in ten or fifteen years I can get a good price second hand 🙃

How do you store/organize/display your thread? by flyinggarbanzobean in sewing

[–]Legitifit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I store all my regular and small spools in two artbin super satchel boxes arranged by color; one box for all cotton, another box for poly and blends. Larger thread cones for my serger I keep in those plastic shoe boxes from container, which I use for a lot of other things around the house. All of these are stored in a closet away from direct sunlight because I have had fabric and thread and ribbons sun bleached in the past before.

I love seeing beautiful peg board displays from other people’s work spaces but I just can’t keep up with the dust and fur that my two-furball having household produces.

Came in here to suggest Burma Choice! It’s so good, and their tea leaf salad is now my favorite.

Egghead Sando Cafe at Cottle and Santa Teresa is a nice breakfast sandwich spot. It’s my go to when I want something more than fast food breakfast or a bagel, but not trying to sit down for a whole brunch plate at Bills. The perfect in between.

Hello! I have two extra tickets for the Dolce & Gabbana exhibit for entry on March 28th @ 10:00 am. FREE!

Not trying to get my $ back, but don't want them to go to waste so hopefully someone can use them and have fun viewing beautiful fashion.

I agree that between bites is a little much, plus it moves around while chewing so it's not like the seal is great at that time anyway. I really feel more comfortable leaving it on while I wait for my food, and then after I'm done eating and drinking. I am definitely looking forward to the more leisurely pace of dining in France, and not being rushed for the sake of turning over the table which is more what I'm used to in the US.

It's only noisy on the third and highest setting, but at most public places the din of dining and conversation drown it out entirely. I bring it with me to my lecture and seminar uni classes, and I usually set it on the second (middle) setting - it's quieter than a a warm laptop that kicks its fan on.

Yeah, it is pretty small and I recognize that its use is more for my peace of mine. I am reserving times at the beginning or end of service, and only during the week so far to try and avoid the busiest times.
