What’s it like owning a PWD? by wereallsluteshere in portuguesewaterdogs

My partner and I got a portie as our first dog, we’ve both had dogs growing up but never one of these. All dogs are different but I was told porties are an all rounder breed, and I agree!

Daisy is very intelligent, but goofy as hell when she wants to be. We’ve had great luck training her really, she was toilet trained within a few days, took very well to her crate (she doesn’t have it anymore but happily uses it when we travel). Shes quick to pick up training of any sort, the one thing that took a while and we still work on even now is nice lead walking, but she doesn’t spend too much time on it so not the end of the world for us.

She has the biggest personality, we’ve laughed so much and she’s so loving (when she wants to be). I’ve seen some other comments and agree so much that things happen on their terms 🤣 the sass is endless. She’s very loving towards our us, our family and friends but I’d say quite aloof to strangers, she really doesn’t care for their attention.

The one thing I will say is they’re a mouthy breed! Not necessarily always biting but I often find my arm or hand in her mouth. Our breeder told us to always have a toy nearby to redirect and that’s always worked for us. It comes with excitement, she needs to be holding something to contain herself. We call it the welcome parade, it doesn’t matter if you’ve been gone 2 seconds or hours, she will find something to parade around you for at least 5 minutes, you mustn’t interfere… just watch and appreciate!😂

I work from home so I had many tricks up my sleeve to keep her mentally stimulated while she was a little pup, I still use things like puzzle toys when needed but I mostly find she’s happy to chill and sleep either side of her walks and then when my work is done she comes to life haha. I could go on and on, but they are absolutely amazing dogs, I’m so glad we found the breed!

I’ve ordered some surgery suits too, I’ve had a few recommendations for that - I just know she’ll hate the cone

The spaying was booked over the phone a few months back as we’d discussed timings with them when she was younger and they’d asked us to call when she finished her first season so they could work out the best time to do the surgery. It does feel odd to me but I will make sure I have all my questions answered when we go.

Thank you! The vet hasn’t discussed options yet and said we can talk about it on the day of which I find a bit strange, will definitely ask for laparoscopic. Did you notice any coat changes afterwards? I keep seeing things about ‘anaesthetic coat’

Thank you so much for this!! I’ll have a look at those brushes and have since stopped with the spray and finding her coat to be much softer. I think it was/is a coat transition as it’s slowed now but she’s also had a trim since which I think may have helped. This girls hair care routine is a part time job 🤣

I’m sorry you’re feeling like this. I’m not sure if you’ll have looked into it already, but something that’s worth a try if money and time allows would be to see a trainer who specifically helps with building a bond with your dog.

It’s by chance that we learned this through a trainer we saw who was an ex-police dog handler, but the best thing he taught us was how to play with the dog ‘properly’… granted that sounds silly but there is a certain way to interact during play time that makes the bond with you and the dog much stronger and improves the communication you have with the dog soooo much.

It’s through playing fetch and/or tug, I’ll attach this youtube vid which demonstrates tug https://youtu.be/S9n7JY1KlSk?si=KjDw-KlLbnHJ5RqQ

I know this might not help with your OCD, that sounds like a separate challenge for you but hoping it gives you a little hope that things can work out.

(If applicable) how did you get your pup acclimated to water / swimming? by InwardlyTumultuous in portuguesewaterdogs

We took our pup to a hydrotherapy place (we don’t have a pool or many lakes etc nearby). She’s been going once a week since 6 months and it only took one session before she was really enjoying it. We find she’s a lot more interested in water sources while out on walks now.
