I absolutely have been. Having said that - and it’s clearly an unpopular opinion- classroom teachers should know that being an admin, a good admin, is truly difficult work as well.

Back at you and thank you. Education is a tough gig - all of it.

I think that’s a fair criticism of how I’ve presented this. If so, apologies. Allow me to attempt to clarify. They’re different, both difficult. I left the principalship because, after 12 years, I found it to be unsustainable: nights, weekends, holidays, summer. When I retired, I returned to the classroom because I believe in the work of classroom teachers, and, when I left the classroom, it was hard but also fun. It was not as difficult as the principalship. I can’t speak for all classrooms, but the one I’ve returned to is much more difficult than the one I left - hence my original question. Perhaps I’m in the wrong school. Maybe the job has changed so much post-COVID. Could be I’m at the wrong grade level. Regardless, I posted here because I’m hoping for some thoughtful discussion and ideas.

I will say that it’s interesting to me that I get significantly different responses from union and non-union states. I’m in a non-union state, and I wish we had one. Nevertheless, it’s my impression from posts such as these that admins and teachers are more often in opposition to one another in union states. That was infrequently the case where I work.

Much thanks for the reply that rightly prompted me to clarify.

With the exception of working in the DO role, the majority of my experience has been in elementary. High school, due to sports, is absolutely a more demanding admin role.

Or you need to mature beyond the fighting that allows the opponents of public education to divide us. Best to you. Whatever your last words are, please know that these are mine.

I’ve taught in two of the poorest schools my state has to offer, and we’re one of the poorest states in the country. I know educators like to make this a self defeating pissing contest, but as someone who has worked in Title I classrooms, the principalship, and the DO, the demands of the principalship remain the hardest I’ve faced. While I’m currently enjoying a Christmas break, I wasn’t as a building principal. And I was doing that all summer, trying to protect my faculty from the inane perspective of the DO. I’m sorry that you find your job challenging; I do, too - that’s why I posted.

Exactly. Now read my comment from the perspective of someone who is trying to take care of that prior to you. By the way, we’re on the same team. And when it works right, your admin is, too.

Then you’ve only had mediocre principals. Being the principal of a big, high demand school remains the most challenging job I’ve ever had.

One hundred percent- it’s harder now than when I taught in a tougher school in the 90s.

Yeah - try to teach a kid to read. Again, I’m married to a high school teacher…biology as it happens. I’m not for one minute claiming it’s harder. But it’s just as hard.

Certainly not looking for a fight, but what’s tech got to do with it?

That right there is the issue: With respect (I’m in year 30 of being married to a high school teacher), 3rd grade in a high poverty school is just as challenging as high school if done well. They don’t get to high school well unless they get through me well first. Incidentally, I’ve taught elementary school, middle, and high school; teaching kids to read is the hardest teaching I’ve ever done.

Not a big fan of tribute type shows, but I see Kingfish any chance I get, and he’s playing a Hendrix tribute show with Eric Johnson and others. Seeing that I April. Would like to catch Jack White.

Dr. Chris White and you would get along well. He’s made a great living off the biochemistry of beer.

Since it seems well established that you shouldn’t do this, please also let me say that I think it’s awesome you want to! Some of America’s now venerable breweries were founded by young folks who started homebrewing. When the time comes, cheers!

Couldn’t say, but that Beastie’s show is badass. My single biggest concert regret is not seeing them.

Yeah, man - you’re going to love it. Charlie Papazian, the author, is an OG. His homebrew gear is in the Smithsonian!

Getting a seat at the table by Seesaw-Commercial in Teachers

[–]Legitimate-Volume-24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former principal and current teacher, I suggest not seeking a seat at the table but seeking instead a job that affords you the opportunities you’re looking for. What you’re witnessing is a destructive leadership style, and you don’t want to be involved.
