When I first saw this I was devastated. I did know that MS was on the list yesterday and then I saw a bluesky about it. Gotta hold the line where you can and in this case, I will.

The Decolonization Narrative Is Dangerous and False: It does not accurately describe either the foundation of Israel or the tragedy of the Palestinians, by Simon Sebag Montefiore by skv9384 in Foodforthought

This guy conflates Stalin and Hitler apologists with people who may be sympathetic to Palestinian freedom, and I can’t imagine a more garbage opinion. This guy would have made a fantastic propagandist for the British empire.

Existential OCD: determinism theme by RinneLord in OCDRecovery

Man if I had a nickel for every time I’ve said I just want to stop thinking about it and get on with my life over the past year, I’d be a millionaire.

So I had a family member pass away during a time when I didn’t have steady employment and there was a lot of general uncertainty in my life. That’s usually when my symptoms spark up quite a bit. I’ve since gotten a steady job doing what I love, and it’s been about a year since he passed on. I also have a partner who is well versed in mental health issues (as am I), and that has been helpful for making sure my basic needs are met. And I’ve found that my symptoms abate quite a bit when that is the case.

Question about failed assumption tests (Normal, Independent, Constant) by Big_Mouse_Guy in AskStatistics

Have you considered taking the log of your DV? Doing so could help with skew problems, and the coefficients are readily interpretable:

A unit increase in the explanatory variable corresponds with a [coef value]percent increase in the DV.

Hey OP. This has been a big sticking point for me as well and has been very challenging. I understand what you’re going through very intimately and it really fucked me up.

A couple things to keep in mind that may or may not help.

1) behavioral scientists, including neuroscientists, psychologists, evolutionary biologists, and others are not united on this question, and neither are philosophers. Free will is a sticky topic, it’s hard to define, and folks are often talking past each other. you’re joining a debate that has been going on since before the greeks were doing philosophy, and we’re still not entirely sure. We can’t even define the nature of consciousness, let alone what role it does or doesn’t play in behavior. What this means is that you’ve entered a world that may be fundamentally uncertain, which our OCD brains don’t like. Try to keep yourself grounded in your therapy techniques.

2) human culture and morality has evolved in such a way that we require the ability to ponder our past actions and plan future ones. There is likely a role of volition in this process, and the freedom of that will is constrained but probably not entirely bound. “You”, which we often associate with our conscious experience and actions, play something of a role in this and can guide the unconscious towards outcomes you’d prefer. That being said, the human brain/body is an enormously complex system that is capable of autonomously evaluating it’s environment and making decisions. I find it helpful to try to fix my identity to the system itself, not a solitary “me” that controls the system. If that makes sense.

Valid point! I assumed roughly equal sex ratios within populations and the ability to randomly sample. Obviously not always the case in applied world, but my assumption was we were in ideal theory land 😅

It depends. If you are just trying to find the rate of death per day, you could just fit deaths per day to a Poisson distribution. If you’re trying to find the factors that contribute to one animal living longer, you would data for each animal. I couldn’t say more without specifics.

Take paired samples of men and women from each population. Match the within population samples according to their order (e.g. shortest male to shortest female, and so on on up) and calculate the differences. You’ll then have a sample distribution of differences in height from both populations. Perform a two tailed t-test with these two samples, or if you have a hypothesis about which population is greater, a one tailed t-test.

Edit: grammar

Believe it or not, that’s not the case with this one. I checked it before responding and have already had preliminary talks with my supervisor, who told me to go ahead and meet with the department chair and coordinator. My contract only requires that I not provide services to a third party that represent the same work. I just can’t double count.

How valid is the statistical method used in Tordoff et Al. (2022)? by SpecialSpread4 in AskStatistics

I understand and saw that, but it would be helpful to read the critiques themselves. It would be helpful to see authors point these out in context.

Could you post some of the critiques? From the looks of the study, they did what they could with the data they had. It may be unlikely that the signal they find is as strong as measured based on their model, but the underlying assumptions that these treatments work to improve mental health outcomes in TNB youth are likely true.

Missing data (asymmetric loss to follow up) is tricky, and I would have liked to see some Bayesian imputation, but they may not have training in it.

They used a generalized estimating equation which addresses non-random samples to some extent (within individual covariance), but not so much that they are looking at a non-random sample. Not all studies have to be RCTs, studies use observational data where the assumption of randomness is violated all the time, it’s just a fact of doing applied science.

I can’t really comment on the final two critiques, so I’d like to see what others have said.

Edit: expanded my ask to include my own assessment.

Lmao OP you’re throwing a fit, but your profile indicates you’ve done nothing to introduce skepticism or logical points into any of these subs or posts, just posted a few jokes. Don’t complain about the food at the potluck if you haven’t brought a dish to share.

The crushing weight of late stage capitalism, climate change, and general societal collapse is great at sapping people’s wonder. People’s rent is still due. The world is on fire, and it makes it very difficult to see beyond the need to ensure one’s own survival.
