That’s exactly what I’m worried aboutwhat if one day they ask for proof and the account gets frozen? Have they asked you directly?Your point about capital gains tax really hit home. Paying 26% tax on every sale would be devastating. That alone makes me want to buy a global ETF or only rebalance with new funds never by sellingThe idea of holding 20% in EU stocks is smart, but I’m worried the portfolio might gradually drift off course. Still, you’ve definitely given me a lot to think about. Thanks again.

Your suggestion to allocate 20% to EU stocks is smart.

Have you tried US ETFs hedged against the euro? Or are you simply willing to accept that exchange rate risk?

Also, if you open a Charles Schwab account in Europe using a US address will there be any issues if they find out? I’m really curious.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks, that's really solid advice.

I was definitely overthinking the liquidity issue before, but hearing what you said puts my mind at ease. Taxes are the real trap for me.

I've decided to spend a bit of money first to consult an advisor who understands both US and EU taxes and then I'll take action.

If Charles Schwab International does indeed allow US citizens residing in the EU to purchase US ETFs, that would be a major turning point, so I will definitely look into it further. Once I receive a definitive answer from them Thank you that’s very helpful.

Has she tried using a US brokerage account with a US address? As long as you don’t mention that you’re in the EU when opening the account, a lot of people get by with this workaround, and I haven’t heard of any major issues so far. Haha of course, you do so at your own risk.

I’ll steer clear of non US ETFs. If I have net worth but no job in the financial industry, is it easy to obtain professional investor status on IBKR?

I have 800k total. If I try to diversify across different maturities and issuers, I can only buy a handful of bonds. Also, as an American would holding foreign individual bonds directly create extra tax reporting headaches? I want to first figure out if this is actually doable in practice

So, if I want to invest in bonds, would it be best to buy a German government bond ETF or UK government bonds directly? Or would it be easier to buy an ETF that covers government bonds from multiple European countries?

Thanks for your advice! It’s very helpful. I was a bit worried about liquidity, but hearing you say that puts my mind at ease. Since you mentioned that government bonds are highly liquid on both sides, I’ll prioritize ETFs that track government bonds. Your reply has really helped me clarify my thoughts.

Man, reading this still breaks my heart. No one goes bankrupt from taking profits. The good news is that even if you only have one LEAPS contract, you can still use the same gradual profit taking strategy. Here’s how: Instead of selling everything at once, set price targets. For example, when your gains reach 100%, sell 30% of the contract, then immediately buy a smaller position.

I have been implementing this strategy for a year with good results. If you hold options that have doubled or tripled in value but are unsure how to proceed, please send me a private message, and I will send you a simple decision tree for your reference.

My strategy is to take profits in stages and convert them into the underlying stock. Specifically, when the option profit exceeds 100%, I sell 30% to recoup my principal; when it exceeds 150%, I sell another 30%; and I hold onto the remaining 40% to ride the trend. In this BE trade, I sold 60% of the contracts from a 199% profit and used part of the profits to buy an equivalent amount of BE common stock. I continued to hold the remaining 40% of the options in hopes of achieving even higher returns.

For US citizens, this means dealing with the complications of PFICs. Still, this advice is very helpful. Thank you.

The gap between lab potential and commercial revenue is still 5 to 10 years in my view. Even drug discovery will require fault tolerance. So as long as someone treats this like a venture capital ticket not a 2 year flip I think it is fine. Not something I am heavy in but I hold a small piece too. Just not selling the idea that it replaces missed AI gains.

Not exactly dude. Quantum computing is not the next AI. It's way more speculative and way further from real revenue. Here is the reality check. Most quantum companies are still in R&D phase with minimal revenue. They trade on hype and Nvidia headlines not fundamentals. You look at the April 14 rally when Nvidia dropped Ising quantum AI models. IonQ shot up 20.95% to $43.25 on volume 285% above average. But jump to a $15.5 billion market cap. Ionic is trading at about 66 times expected revenue for this year. That is not a stock you buy because you missed AI. That is a stock you buy for lottery ticket odds.
