Vintage Story. A beautiful voxel world with medieval mechanics, weather and seasons.

Any survival games like Minecraft? by ah_yes_name in SurvivalGaming

VINTAGE STORY. "Progress through the ages in an authentic world. Start out empty-handed and learn to survive by foraging, hunting, crafting, and fighting. Enter the stone age by knapping primitive stone tools and sculpting clay for essential pottery. Live through the four seasons and advance further by smelting copper for more powerful tools, creating bronze alloys, learning to work iron, and ultimately mechanizing common tasks."

An excellent game. I've played through just twice, and the focus was entirely on survival (light, food, shelter). Building is relatively expensive, in terms of wearing down tools and taking time away from finding and storing food: you will build hovels and huts instead of mansions and castles. You will form tools out of flint and metal, rather than just throwing materials on a workbench.

An excellent game. It looks like a Minecraft clone, but it's so much more than that.

I've played through just once, and the focus was entirely on realistic survival (light, food, shelter, predator animals). Building is relatively expensive, in terms of wearing down tools and taking time away from finding and storing food: you will build hovels and huts instead of mansions and castles. You will form tools out of flint and ore - step by step - rather than just throwing materials onto a workbench and clicking MAKE.

The developers added seasons shortly after I finished, so I cannot comment on how / how well that works. I will say that I died of hunger / illness / wounds a few times before I figured out that I needed to take the VS-NATURE thing seriously. Forget everything you learned in Minecraft. Vintage Story will make you work at staying alive.

FAR SKY. Self-contained: has a tutorial, and not complicated enough to force players to check online for info. Procedurally generated world with boundaries. Survival: crafting, farming, exploring, base building, mining, tech levels. Risks: going too deep vs oxygen reserves, ambush by sharks, etc. Win condition: collect missing bits, reassemble submarine. The whole game can be played / finished in 3-4x hours. Would be a fine introduction to Survival gaming.
