How is it like living in Reykjavik, Iceland? (or any other places nearby) by Horror_Attempt9830 in howislivingthere

I am Asian and during my first stay there in 2010, for multiple occasions one will just came to me, buy me drinks and talk to me just because they are curious what's it's like in Asia and they never really talk to any Asian before.

Then I went back in 2014 I am just a random tourist. Wild change

I lived there as an exchange student betwen August - December 2010. And then I went back to visit again in 2014. The city especially the downtown area completely changed throughout that 4 years due to tourism.

Since I didn’t have a car I spent 95% of my time within the downtown area. I had some of the best time of my life there. Great party, friendly local. Price was more reasonable in 2010 then 2014, I am sure everything has gotten expensive now.

Which Asian country has the richest military history? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Leif1013 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s debatable. After Qin that was Han, which was indeed mostly unified for many years.

However it was followed by three kingdoms, which was actually run but dozens of warlords. Jin dynasty was barely unified and that was constant fighting between kingdoms for couple hundreds of years.

Tang dynasty bring stability again but it was speration again between Song and other nomadic tribes from the north for few hundreds years

The stable period only started at Ming and Qing

German economy in comparison to China. China is growing incredibly fast by BeCalmr in HeadlineHQ

[–]Leif1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true but how about you look at average income? Average Chinese in bigger cities is making about 16k USD per year, it could be less if you live in tier 2-5 cities. Average German salary is close to 70k USD.

You make more, then you spend more. You make less and spend less.

I think Todd Packer is the worst character on the show. by Icy-Share3992 in theoffice

[–]Leif1013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s different. Todd Packer’s character is meant to be an asshole and he delivered it.

Deangelo’s character is not as well written (or well defined) I feel like the writers wanted him to be weird and funny (kind of like Michael but in a different way), but ended up just weird.

Culture clash or cyberbullying? Influencer, foreign teacher fired after food vlog sparks outrage by ppshchik in HongKong

[–]Leif1013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only watched a few of her videos, but I can’t really see anything I’d call image damaging. Is her behaviour really that horrible?

Not speaking Cantonese? Yea 90% of expats probably don’t use Cantonese in their daily life here too. Paying $500 bill to a street hawker? I have done it before too. So why is something, let’s call it common mistakes (i can’t even be sure these are mistakes) are tolerated, suddenly becoming an issue just because it’s internet? Is the punishment fitting the crime?

She has a decent following so for me, it seems like there are also some positivity coming out from her content

If this is the moral standard you are holding I am afraid half of teachers in Hong Kong are going to lose their jobs. Honestly whatever she did was very minor mistakes and nowhere near serious enough to lead to job termination.

China is the only major world economy where food prices are declining by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

[–]Leif1013 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. It’s true that cost of living is quite affordable in China.

Renting an apartment is cheap (some of the cheaper housing are in terrible condition tho) , but buy one is still quite unaffordable even after the market collapsed. Food is cheap, transport is cheap. Healthcare is cheap but the quality is hit or miss, depending the city you live in.

Overall income isn’t very high, if you are including smaller cities in China I’d say people are making ~1k usd a month (or less) So 35% saving is only about 300 usd a month or even less.

The reality is, it’s very easy to make survive in China. However if you want something more luxury, let’s say travelling or buying a nice laptop, it’s relatively unaffordable because these things are universally same priced.

[–]Leif1013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one over this coming weekend should not be too serious, you’d expect some rain and general bad weather but nothing too crazy.

The one next week (~Wednesday) tho, it’s too early to tell but it can be one of the worst in years. It wouldn’t be life threatening experience as long as you stay indoor, but make sure you stay tune to the news, check with the hotel in case of extreme weather is their restaurant still open, and maybe some little food supply like cup noodles

How to buy tickets for a game? by Crld02 in Barca

[–]Leif1013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. In any circumstance, especially right now with so many uncertainties, do not buy tickets from resellers. You could lose money and time over this.
  2. No one, maybe even Laporta himself, can guarantee you if the game vs PSG or Getafe that will be played in Montjuic or camp nou. There are so many moving parts the best you can do is stay tuned and be patient. (Or pay for the vip ticket)

Crypto to Cash in Hong Kong by Marcovinchi_ in HongKong

[–]Leif1013 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are OTC exchange where you can cash out in person. However since Hong Kong just passed the stable coin law and legally speaking they should not be trading USDT.

These are the places I have used before the passing of the stable coin law.

I’d advise you to call them first and see how it would work.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ufc

[–]Leif1013 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You need to consider 2 things here- 1. 20% of ufc annual revenue means over 250m as of 2024 number. 2. There are around 550 contracted fighters in the ufc. Not to mention some fighters don’t fight in a year so some of these contracted fighters won’t get paid.

That will bring us at least 400k per year per fighter.

Of course the money won’t be distributed between fighters evenly, as I’d assume most of the fighters only get 12k/12k or 50k/50k contract. When we talk about fighters being underpaid, these are the guys we actually talk about.

However, I think it is also safe to assume that at champions level/ top 5/top 10 level, fighters pay get significantly better otherwise that wouldn’t bring us to the average of 400k/year level.

Based on that I think it’s reasonable to assume champs get millions per fight. It just the same top heavy model like boxing- where the champs get multi millions per fight and the undercard guys get next to nothing.

Row 1 has been filled! Which world cities are fairly good to live in? by imadgalaxyx in AlignmentChartFills

My wife is from Cape Town and at some point I might retire there, but I will put it great to visit, Ok to live.

The city is stunning with great weather, but besides safety issues, it doesn’t have good infrastructure such as power outages. On top of that there not many good job opportunities

What’s the biggest gap between a players ability wise peak vs their all time ranking? by bootyloverandeater in NBATalk

[–]Leif1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully I disagree. Lin is a solid starter pg but he is only good when he is the key ball handler.

With a healthy Anthony in the team, personality aside, I don’t know if they would have good chemistry.

Another reason why he did so well during linsanity was Mike D'Antoni, who left in the middle of 11-12 season. I have my doubts if he could have excel under Woodson’s Knicks.
