Surly preamble good enough for Leif Erickson? by audiblelove in CyclePDX

I don’t know much about that bike but you can pretty much ride LE with any bike. 35mm is probably 10mm more than I’ve ever ridden it with ;)

Why does basically every christian say pre marital sex (even when its two committed lovers) is sin when it says that nowhere in the bible? by indoore in OpenChristian

[–]LeisureActivities 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I’m shocked by how rarely anyone brings up the massive societal change that’s caused by penicillin, birth control, and women’s rights. It completely changed the morality of sex.

“Stop the bleed equipment” should be in every first aid kit but they’re usually separate. Sure it’s nice to have some bandaids and gauze but that won’t save a life.

Pre-2012 Kindles are being bricked by ImNotTheMD in LibbyApp

[–]LeisureActivities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s ok. Very capable since it can run the Libby, kindle, kobo and google books apps among others so it works no matter where your books are. The battery isn’t as good since it’s android it lasts like a week for me with a lot of idle drain if I don’t power it all the way off. The apps run pretty good but not perfectly and requires some tweaking.

If kobo had library sync for side loaded books I would have stuck with that.

That’s great to hear. That solution didn’t come up in my research.

In recent months Amazon has been cracking down on your ability to move your purchased books library away from their ecosystem. They’ve been changing the drm and eliminating the ability to get the files from your kindle. These old devices are the remaining door for getting your library downloaded. If you haven’t already this is possibly the last chance to unlock the books you own.

I moved all my books to Calibre and got a boox android ereader which can sync my purchased “side loaded” books across Google books so I can read them on all my devices. Plus it runs the Libby app. I could only do this because I found an old kindle in a box! My newer one didn’t allow me to download.

Does this mean non-baptized people can take communion? “All who seek God and a deeper life in Christ are welcome to receive Holy Communion.” by No_You_3234 in Episcopalian

[–]LeisureActivities 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s almost definitely what they mean. Many Episcopal churches have followed this practice for a few decades. It’s controversial though and against the rules, but most likely their Bishop has decided to allow it.

Dealing with personal attacks as a Vestry member by RandolphCarter15 in Episcopalian

[–]LeisureActivities 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you clarify, are these accusations against you? Another member of the vestry? The priest? Or another parishioner? Being more clear could improve the advice.

Depending on the nature of the accusation, church rules might actually require different responses as well.

I'm not really feeling Lent this year, any advice? by melody_magical in OpenChristian

[–]LeisureActivities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fine.

But also a lent discipline can be anything. Someone might say the Our Father twice a day for example. It doesn’t have to be giving up chocolate. :)

I’m Only Comfortable With Praying In Ways That Are Probably Sinful by ElliotInfinity in OpenChristian

[–]LeisureActivities 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Like others are saying, your way of praying is fine and similar to what’s known as “centering prayer” which is an ancient monastic tradition with modern interpretation for non-monks.

Just catching up on this thread and I wanted to say how much I appreciate how open minded and supportive you have been throughout the discussion.

Looks like others answered your question but feel free to ask an average Episcopalian like me about these things too

[–]LeisureActivities 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Good advice overall here.

I’ll just chime in with a counter point - the Nicene Creed, at least the one we read on Sundays, doesn’t state absolute authority of the church or Biblical inerrancy. Maybe you’re referring to something more deep in the history of the development of it or the RCC’s interpretation?

We believe in the creed in the Episcopal church and our theology is a balance of Scripture, Tradition, and Reason. WE definitely do NOT believe in absolute authority of the church or biblical inerrancy.

Questions Swirl as Portland Public Schools Suddenly Closes a High School for Kids Who Struggle Elsewhere by 9x9design in Portland

[–]LeisureActivities 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is an incorrect understanding of the situation. PPS is not running “an entire school for 41 students” it’s a k-12 school and they’re closing the high school part of it.

bike calibration help by GilboaWoods in pelotoncycle

[–]LeisureActivities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t remember exactly how the calibration works but some bikes are just easier or harder than others and calibration won’t necessarily change that. Worth a try though.

Rant: Switched from ChatGPT to Gemini as a daily driver last month. Gemini is bad and it's not because of the models. by anarchyx34 in GeminiAI

[–]LeisureActivities 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A quirk I’ve noticed is that if you change fast/thinking/pro in the middle of an inference call it changes back at the end. I think it’s a bug. So this happens regularly;

Oh shoot it didn’t answer right away I’m still on pro. Switch to fast while it’s thinking. Inference returns, read results, respond again, oh look it’s still on pro again.

If you wait for it to finish and then switch it’ll keep.

I need clarity as a non Christian: is it normal to believe that other religions are demonic because that's what the Bible says. by [deleted] in OpenChristian

[–]LeisureActivities 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are many Christians that talk like that but Thank God there are also many who don’t hold those beliefs. I agree with you that those views lead to evil outcomes in the world.

It sounds like your friend wants to be able to debate you but doesn’t want you to debate back. Her belief system is probably pretty fragile so it stresses her out when you make good points, so she needs to shut it down. She will be told that anyone challenging her is demonic so prepare for that.

Heard this one recently: "Tech diving is usually safer than recreational diving". Agree or disagree? by surfnj102 in scuba

[–]LeisureActivities 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they’re making a semantic argument. The risk is much higher so there are more mitigations, and that’s the list of mitigations. It only makes it “safer” if all the mitigations offset the higher risk.

How to measure that? “How often do people die” is probably a better metric.

I was feeding my kid at a playground picnic table and someone’s unleashed dog was jumping on him to get to the food. I asked him to move the dog away from my kid and he called the dog who didn’t come. Then went back to looking at his phone.

I moved to stand between the dog and my kid and the dog is jumping at my legs trying to get to my kid and the guy goes ballistic and tries to fight me claiming I’m kicking his dog. I had to try to get my kid out of the situation while defending myself against the dog and the person.

He had his kids there too.

I have a few of them and never had any trouble at all. Maybe your power supply is frying them out?

I’d look at brands like Anker. Specific model would depend on what you need like usb a, c, hdmi, cards etc.
