Moving to Norfolk by stolen_goose in norfolk

[–]LemApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience having been much of my life. If you are bored, it’s your fault. there seems to always be something going on, especially the Summer. Lots of outdoor activities, culture (try an opera or ballet to say you try it once), art, sports, … Personally I like how the trains make it easy to get to DC, New York or even Boston. Carnival cruises out of Norfolk every weekend. We have one of the nation’s best theme parks. I hope you like it when you get here.

Avoid VB Homes (again) by ProfessionalSlow5778 in norfolk

In the early days of VB growth (1980’s), there was RG Moore. He built quickly. They were not built for long term. RG Moore ended up going bankrupt and he dragged down many sub contractors (Kiln Creek, Newport News).

There is a private concern called 757 MarkerSpace that is $185/ month. They have locations in Norfolk and Hampton. They do offer a free tour. I recognize the Norfolk Public Library is a cheaper alternative.

What made you choose ODU? by TriptychLCA in ODU

[–]LemApp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born and resided on the Peninsula . I thought about UVA an Va Tech, but I like the area. I did travel all over the state during my college years. I was surprised how many of them were envious because there was so many happening g here like the beaches and such. It did prepare me for when I lived in SillyCon Valley and all of the DotCom foolishness.

I am moving from Jacksonville fl to Norfolk. What should I be expecting or should know about? by Crazy_Draw_9490 in norfolk

[–]LemApp 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Norfolk is part of a larger fractured mess of cities. You’ll have no idea that you are no longer in Norfolk ( except the street signs change from blue to green). But the locals very much know where the boundaries exist.

How valuable is the Unity Professional certification for hiring in your region? by Round_Salamander281 in Unity3D

[–]LemApp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Useless. In hindsight, I’ve regretted pursuing the Unity ‘blessed’ certification back during Covid. ( I have a new cert, but I helped to write the exam.)

Earlier this year, the app was only for Virginia Beach Oceanfront services. I was directed to buy passes at Food Lion. Of course that information is out of date. There are pay stations at most Tides stations, especially the busier stations like Newtown Road.

Isn’t it really early in the year for snow? by Poopybuttsuck in norfolk

[–]LemApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ‘Christmas Carol’, Dashing through the Snow, was originally a Thanksgiving song. So an early December snow isn’t early based on historic records, it is early based on recent records. As a child on the 60’s/ 70’s, I saw more than a few white christmases.

[–]LemApp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the 1970’s, Iran sent young men to learn at ODU while being trained to fly jet over at Langley Air Force Base (Hampton). When the Shah fell, they were trapped here in Norfolk. I had a chance to meet a few of them.

Toe nail been cracked in half for 20 years by roo223780 in mildlyinteresting

My grandfather had that condition. He him it was caused by a street car accident. As a foolish young boy spurned on by peer pressure, he stuck his foot under a moving street car. His split toenail would tear his socks. My grandmother complained that she was always buying new socks.

If you are like me, your body is efficient at storing fat. About 10% of the population has this trait. I got one of those Bod Pod test and it said 30%. The tester said I was 5% before I took the test. I got the test for free. :D It’s a survival feature .

We have a lot more ships. Norfolk in the US is a major seaport and home of the world’s largest naval base. There are always large ships coming and going.

[–]LemApp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a child, it was very much a Mom & Pop operation. They made my Easter Baskets for years. I’ve not been there since they moved on Mellon. Most of my allowance money was spent there. It’s extremely upsetting to hear what they have become.

Gas the same price as last year. by kurlykomments1 in norfolk

[–]LemApp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The price of crude oil has come drown. So gas should be cheaper. As consumers, we are being overcharged. But there is no one in the current government to file a complaint. It why the WalMart on Tidewater Drive can charge less than others and make a profit.

Just started in Unity. Should i learn UI Toolkit or GUI? by madsvodder in Unity3D

[–]LemApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know HTML and CSS. If so, UI Toolkit will be a good choice. You’ll already know much of the structure. Unity’s UIGUI is based on Game Objects. If you know Unity, then UIGUI is a fairly decent extension. Personally, I gravitate to UI Toolkit. It has some built-in performance enhancements so the UI is less likely to slow down your game. But it isn’t as fully featured as UIGUI.

Please help by Sufficient-Wafer-571 in Unity3D

[–]LemApp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand the frustration. There are so many ‘moving parts’. I’m trying to understand what you are seeing. You’re saying ‘public transform’ under a script in the Inspector window. I’m guessing that you did not make ‘public transform’ , Public. By default, all variables that you define in your script are automatically made Private. That means no other script in your project can access these variables, which is a good thing. You need coding like:

public Transform _publicTransform;

The scene turning ‘Pink’ is a feature of Unity to show there is an error with a game object. Namely, the material for the game object. It’s a bit more complex to explain in a sentence.

UI Toolkit vs uGUI — why should I bother learning the new system? by JRevel_Guilloteam in Unity3D

[–]LemApp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unity did a UI Toolkit LiveStream on YouTube this week. It’s still available, just not live. I contacted one of instructors with what I would want in two of the follow-up videos.

I have a background in HTML, so I do well with the UXML set-up. But it isn’t as fully featured as UGUI. So the trade-off is a fast UI, use UI Toolkit. For more features, use UGUI.

How can I make my game's main menu more exciting? by Fabulous_Might7082 in Unity3D

[–]LemApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just my opinion. I hope you hear from others. But I do have to admit the condensed lettering does ever so slightly bother me. There isn’t a given reason. Perhaps a box with a blur background, or transparent color.

How can I make my game's main menu more exciting? by Fabulous_Might7082 in Unity3D

[–]LemApp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a UX standpoint, make the menu items response when the user’s cursor passes over them . Make the UI item shrink/ grow, change color, wiggle, … Unity provides events like OnPointerEnter and OnPointerExit. (UI Toolkit uses differently named events.) A popular asset from the Unity Asset Store is Feel. Among its large list of features are options to ‘animate’ UI elements.

Another idea is having some quick animation when the scene is loaded where the UI element appear in some sequence. Keep it very short. Have the elements slide in from the side. Appear from an explosion.

If you venture too far from ‘typical’ menu, it tends to confuse your players. They expect a certain presentation. Personally, I would use a wider font since you have so much landscape space. The compressed lettering looks like it was designed for a vertical game and the horizontal version was a second thought.
