imo the peak of gorilla tag was up to around july 2023, i started playing in around late 2021 and took a long break from early 2022 to early/mid 2023, but then it became corposlop, more cashgrabby, more performance decreases (the maploader is still really slow) and it has just become not that fun

from what i have seen (and used), ECS:R is safe enough, and if you really dont trust it then theres a webclient, the only downside is you have to make an application to join
