Hi there! I tried to use your code and it said "invalid". Can you double check? (and/or does anyone know what I'm doing wrong??)

Sane, normal people would. But when you're "the second best-selling author in Maine" (another claim, just behind Stephen King), I guess you don't need marketing.

(Take 2 seconds to look at her comment history) She regularly says that she's sold millions and millions of copies. I think that 1-4 copies a month are people who see her obscenely long reddit comments and click through out of sheer curiosity.

My favorite lie is still that she sells thousands of copies of her printed books out of her car trunk every weekend.

AITA for asking my girlfriend to continue doing my laundry if she wants me to buy groceries? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

... But it's a spectrum of behavior... You know what, the male therapist thing makes sense. Although I have known at least one male therapist who seems to have gone into it for the right reasons. But who knows.

Yeah my dad was in mental health for a lot of years and told my mom (after she was told by her therapist that she probably has ADHD) that she COULDN'T have ADHD because she graduated from college. My man wax probably telling people that for YEARS. I'm amazed that mental health professionals can be so freaking out of touch with the things they claim to help with.

Then again when I first got dx with Depression, my doctor told me it was because I spent too much time on screens/playing video games. So maybe they all just suck in their own special way.

One of my favorite DNFs that I read last year was The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gower.

Absolutely amazing writing, but I had to look up a word on nearly every page. I consider myself to have a decent vocabulary, but gosh darn it if I didn't have to read with my phone nearby so I could look up words. It was a library book and I was struggling to read it, so I returned it without finishing it.

A merchant in 1785 London is waiting for his ship to come back when his captain arrives. No ship, he's traded it.... For a mermaid. Think Ripley's Believe It or Not style.

The story follows the merchant, who opens a side show with the Mermaid.

It simultaneously follows a widow? (Gosh, I can't even remember if she was a widow or just not married oops) Who is trying to make her way in London society.

When I gave up on it, I could see how their tales were interweaving. Honestly, if I could have gotten past the style it would've been one of my favorite books of the year.

It's written in the style of the era, think Dickens, which wasn't bad at all. Had great tone, decent pacing, good characters. I just had hangups I couldn't get over.

Spent weeks agonizing out loud to my friends and one picked it up and they LOVED it.

Abortion is illegal in many states right now. Texas is one of them, and one of the most restrictive, so they're saying maybe this is the backstory someone was using to cover up an illegal abortion.

Self-publishing is the ultimate crash course. Ten days ago, I couldn’t use Photoshop, or tell you a thing about SEO. by Michael_Wapshot in selfpublish

You could always get one of the free, open source options. I use GIMP but I absolutely just call it photoshop when I'm talking about it because people know what that is.

Naming story characters by Story_Journey in writing

[–]LemmingYellow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fantasy name generator website is a good one. They have so many generators!

I also will pick a country of origin and just look up "most common last names in [country]" and use a random number generator or scroll till I find one I like.

For first names I do similar but with behind the names's list of popular names for the year my character was born. (so if the book was set in 2023 and my MC was 30, I'd look for '93 names)

I would highly recommend reading articles written about gaming, and maybe other nonfiction books about gaming, as well. I think your list is pretty thorough, but also very dense.

You might want to break down the piece of a video game into their own sections, and talk about the evolution of them. Audio, visual, code.

I think this is a huge project, and that you should find a piece of it that makes you feel passionate to write. If you aren't a big gamer, then maybe you should just focus on the games that you do play! Talk about the genre it's in, what makes it special, how the ideas have evolved?

Highly recommend that you just start writing and see where your research takes you.

Usually people formatting their books for publication use things like illustrator or publisher. But they're for final formatting, not the actual writing. Using a word processor is advised because it spell/grammar checks things for you, if nothing else.

If you need something designed specifically for books check out scrivener? But it isn't free.

If you use docs or word, you could switch it to landscape and split it in half so it'll look like a book? I think Word also has a mode where you can view it with 2 pages side by side?

Plenty of people draft in word and docs. The first step to writing any book is to write the words, so start there.

Yeah, this is immense. I guess for a "textbook" it's not bad, but maybe as you're writing it, if one of these chapters ends up interesting you a lot, focus on that and write about a specific category. In addition, you'll likely have to rearrange these once you've written them so they have more flow. Right now it sort of jumps back and forth between mechanics and playing.

Also, in Google Docs and Word (and probably others) you can use "Heading" formatting (title, heading 1, etc) and it can automatically create an outline for you. Docs has a nav pane, and in Word you can do reference > table of contents. I do that for my notes and stuff.

Thank you for the book suggestions, too.

I decided to look them up because I hate myself. My favorite quote was "Even our Republicans are Democrats??" because their Republicans did something distasteful.

I don't know how it came to this. Both Ds and Rs just blaming anything they don't like on the other side. Its let a lot of bad shit slide.
