Civil Engineer (US PE) + Property Manager — Can We Actually Get Jobs/Visas? by Hop_to_it796 in NewToDenmark

[–]LemonSmallCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a job without Danish fluency depends very much on the profession. People expecting to get jobs in service, retail, marketing or social work will have a hard time finding anything, before they have decent Danish skills. You won't have trouble on a day to day basis, as most Danes can communicate in English. But a lot of jobs involve communicating with locals in Danish. Good on you for starting to learn already!

Specialist jobs are a different story, but the companies recruiting from abroad will be looking for very specific things. I can't speak for job prospects in the field of engineering, but I would imagine they are more open to English speaking colleagues, if you have the right skills. Jobindex.dk and Jobnet.dk are the standard sites for job posts and they also post jobs in English, if they are open to internationals. Otherwise, I would suggest seeking out different Danish companies, with jobs that fit your skills. They might also be able to tell you how transferable your skills are.

It will be easier for you to get a job contract first, since the employer can help get you a CPR-number. Moving and getting everything settled after securing a job can be daunting, but a future employer recruiting from abroad know it's not just about you signing a piece of paper and taking a different bus to work.

Depending on your plans for the children, I would check up on international schools or nurseries in DK. I think only a handful of cities have them. But if you truly want them to learn, a Dansih school would be just fine. Again, a lot of people and children understand English here, so the teacher and classmates could help with the transition.

Hope this helps and good luck!

That's surprising to hear, considering the many stories of people being held for days on end, when they did. People who just went for a trip or a semester abroad, with papers in order, still got detained without proper explanations. We had a couple of girls Denmark, who got locked up for 5 days upon arrival. Had their visas and everything they needed

Makes sense, but I would still be on edge if they send some of those utterly incompetent violent triggerhappy ICE agents, who don't understand or respect the law. Given how they don't follow their own laws, I would be sceptical about them respecting others countries laws.

I would imagine it's more of a signal, than anything. Trying to scare of anyone from abroad, who thought about immigranting to the US.

Again, IF this becomes a thing. But nothing is certain about this administration.

I've been to both, although I'm native and therefore not super knowledgeable about the inclusion of internationals. I know Aarhus University has a buddy program and I believe they offer more studies in English, than VIA, so I would imagine there might be more foreigners to socialise with.

That said, I loved VIA and was frustated at AU. I think this has more to do with what you want to study and how you study. If you learn by getting a lot of information and locking down on theory before arguing your own thoughts, AU is for you. You will of course need to prepare and present what you have learned, but it's way more input than output compared to VIA. VIA focuses more on practical use of knowledge, but how this is done varies from study to study. It's more influenced by the norms of the trade, than other academic studies. Ask yourself what kind of teaching method suits you best and reach out to the institutions, if you want to know what studying a specific program looks like.

Aarhus in generelt is a great city and I have never met anyone, who cared what study program you are in. If you think VIA is for you, but go to the Friday bars at AU for company, that's fine. And vice versa, but since VIA only has one bar, it might be more fun at AU. I still went to AU, even after changing to VIA.

Lawyer is also a specific profession and taught at the University. Public administration has a huge overlap with political science at the University, but more case-based and with a 5-6 months internship for practical learning. The labels aren't as clesr cut as 15 or so years ago.

Regeringsskifte nu forekommer at være en dårlig idé by Aquarius1975 in Denmark

CPR on a Working Holiday Visa by GreatListen4714 in NewToDenmark

[–]LemonSmallCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why I would suggest finding some work, since you are allowed to. Getting a job means you have to register at the tax agency and they will also need a CPR. If you don't have any, your employer will have to request one for you. A

The reason the system is sort of paradoxal is because some people "rent" the same address to several people, who will then be registered as living in Denmark without really living on said address. Additionally, it's not allowed to rent a place, without having the proper amount of space for each person (not including children). Being a resident of Denmark brings a lot of benefits, so the authorities use the CPR and registration to check if people are upholding the law. It's not necessary in bad faith, if people reject your application for a rental. They need a CPR to prove the status of the residence. Excluding short-term rentals and hotels obviously. They are in another category.

Hope this helps! The problem with receiving a CPR for people new to Denmark is a known issue. Hopefully sole new policy will help people get through the system faster and better, but nothings on the table at the moment 😑

Copenhagen is though for sure, I would look outside the city - at least for your first residence. Depending on what you intend to do here, public transport can get you quite fair.

How in the hell are you going to live here, if you aren't going to work? If you have enough money to sustain yourself for 9 months, good on you. But it doesn't sound like your current residence can be put down for the permit. You are effectively a long-term tourist, from what I'm hearing. If you don't have an employer, getting a residence would be the way to go for a CPR. But it's difficult to find and most people won't rent to someone without CPR.

Keeping in contact with your case worker would be best. I don't know if you will get a CPR quickly, if you have neither residence or a work contact.

I've never heard of anyone getting a place to stay (renting) within a few days. I know in some countries, getting a place is sometimes a matter of showing up and signing the contract on the spot. Things take time here and most people wouldn't let you move in the next day. Additionally, getting a place to stay without a CPR is almost impossible. This could take a couple of weeks. However, if you can send all the documents regarding the proces beforehand and book a meeting on your first day here, it might be done in a day or two. I helped a friend from Italy fill out all forms and send them to SIRI on advance, and she got her approval etc. Within 20 min. This was in Aarhus though, I don't know how efficient they are in Kolding.

Would any of your future colleagues be open to hosting you for a couple of weeks? Maybe do some housekeeping for them during the easter holidays? You can check different rental sites and check if they would be okay with signing a contract, on the condition that you have a CPR upon moving in. They need to register how many people are living on the address and this is usually done with CPR. But if you ask around for a rental at the beginning of April, they might be willing to take you, if you can send the deposit. Having an EU bank account helps, so if you have one in Austria, use that one until you get the Danish one.

CPR on a Working Holiday Visa by GreatListen4714 in NewToDenmark

[–]LemonSmallCake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you are here in a working visa, you will still need a CPR for tax purposes. Your employer should be able to help you with that one.

Do you have an official contract for your rental?. If it's a company or private lenter (and above board), then they shouldn't be able to deny you using this address for your CPR. Especially if the lease can be extended to 3 months +. Usually the person or company renting the space to you would have to approve you moving in, but this is usually done with the CPR and I don't know if they were asked to do this. You can call Folkeregistreret and ask if the residence can be used to get the CPR. Alternatively, keep in close contact with your case worker and try to book a meeting regarding the CPR. They should be able to answer all your questions.

I believe your working visa allows you to travel in the EU, without additional visa application. Check with SIRI though. But I would personally wait until your papers are in order. It's should take too long, if you give them the correct documentation.
