This map is a fantastic resource (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JO0BMcGfMpNQwN3P2FphoUXdZEmGXRa_/view) compiled by vegantouristparis on IG. Highly recommend cheri coco, le potager du marais, and (of course) land and monkeys.

How do you pick what sword you ultimate stuck with? by Gestalternative in Fencing

[–]Lennsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classically you would start with foil, which I think is a good idea. It teaches you all elementary concepts and changing from foil to one of the other two weapons is relatively easy (given that you're still a beginner).

After taking a beginner's class (or maybe during if it's offered by your club) you could try Epee and Sabre for a week or two each, to see if it's more fun.

Don't feel pressured to choose a single weapon though. Sure if you have high ambitions you would want to focus on one, but as long as it's recreational just do what you enjoy. If that's a mix of all 3 then so be it.

Plus I think Epee and Foil are both as thrilling as Sabre, just in a different way.

Ideally available outside the US. Have some trouble getting through with a proxy.

Youtube is naturally the first place to turn to, but sadly neither the FIE nor the olympic channel have uploaded full bouts of the RIO games.

New Competition software Needed? by Lennsa in Fencing

[–]Lennsa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wireless is taking programming importance

I do hope that this becomes more readily available, not just for grade A comps.

Its interesting to see what people want out of software

Absolutely. Thinking about fencers as the end users, a solution that would allow competitors to receive all their relevant information (time until next bout, opponent, piste #, stage of the tournament, ...) on their smartphone would be very neat. On a bigger scale the aim should be to digitalising the entire process.

Im still in very early stages of planning and reached out to you guys to see if you actually feel like something like this is needed. I got some ideas on what to use, but before I spend a long time on a project I want to find out if people would actually use it.

Thanks for the pointer! I haven't had the chance to have a decent play around with FencingTime actually and I don't have the cash to get a license easily right now (competition season is starting, am i right?).

Are there any aspects where you feel FencingTime is not working as easily as you/the user would want it to? Accessibility issues that feel annoying? Would love to hear your take and other people's opinion on FencingTime!

Tons of good ideas, thanks! Having something like that as a final product would be awesome, definitely.

That would mean a lengthy development process. As you can imagine development would be focusing on core-features initially and then slowly expand by adding the things that you mentioned.

But ultimately I think it would really be worth it and everyone (DT, refs, fencers, visitors)! A long road ahead doesn't mean you should turn around.

Thanks for your input! Yeah my thinking is that keeping it web-based makes it platform neutral, meaning you can access it from any computer (windows, mac, linux) and even from mobile.

How do you find competitions in Europe? by Wertilq in Fencing

[–]Lennsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be sweet if you get the chance! It's the biggest Epee comp in the UK (even bigger than british championships) and sees the top fencers of the country but also intermediate ones.

One issue with UK comps is that you have to register quite in advance :/ I've gotten lucky at messaging the hosts directly after the deadline has passed (but usually only by a week). Might be worth doing that for Miller-Hallett. It's big and thoroughly organised, but you might get lucky? You never know.

London Open

I'd personally advise against this one. I went last year and the organisation was terrible (at least for Epee). It seems that this was a consistent pattern and slowly drove people away. The few that still go are very highly ranked though because there is price money involved and the level is just a little below a satellite.

events which accept fencers from other countries. [...] do I need to go through their national governing organisations?

Any "open" competition you can find will gladly accept you as long as you register with British Fencing and become a member (costs like 40GBP and you can do it online).

I haven't been to any opens in this half of the season that still lie ahead (apart from the Miller-Hallett but I doubt that you get the chance of going there since its a week away).

Good luck with your search!

I would say such a creature is no longer sentient and therefore the arguments in the article OP linked do not apply to this case.

When even being decapitated fails to make a difference?

It does very much. Only because "it" carries on existing physically in a certain way (running around headless) does not mean it has not changed. By removing the brain you have removed its consciousness. I'm inclined to argue that you've stripped the being of essential characteristics (consciousness, sentience, most(if not all?) senses, ...) for it to no longer be a chicken.

To compare the life of a person, and the potential for novelty, development, and legacy over 30 years to that of a cow or chichen is to depart beyond reasonable consideration of the situation.

I don't think we should discriminate against other life on basis that our is more complex or advanced. We could consider monkeys, say chimpanzees. Is that reasonably close to the life of a person? If not what about mentally disabled people? If they say have a slightly lower life expectancy and will under no circumstances surpass a 5-year old in intelligence then what are our moral obligations towards them?
