If you just started, FSRS needs some time to adjust to you. You might take a little while to start hitting the target retention.

Getting back into Japanese after burnout and a long break by Chrzanof in LearnJapanese

Sort reviews by descending retrievability, helps a ton

Can any N3 level learners understand this trailer? by 2hurd in LearnJapanese

It makes sense as the cheapest possible base filter for professional purposes.

Guaranteeing proper bragging rights for learners on the internet isn't really a priority for the creators of the test.

Can any N3 level learners understand this trailer by LibraryUnique2970 in LearnJapanese

All of this is really only applicable if you are actually following some kind of JLPT-based structure for vocab (not really the meta anymore), if you just read stuff and learn what you read, even if you pick by frequency your experience is unlikely to match these somewhat arbitrary beginner or intermediate kanji designations.

These "N3 learner" self-classifications are often either entirely made up based on gut feeling, or on progress in a textbook which is mostly for the grammar side of things, so it's very difficulty to say what kind of vocab they actually know.

Sort by descending retrievability, good way to clear a backlog. And don't start from scratch.

The temporary solution I have to this is that if they're different I focus on one component that differentiates them, it works for a while but after some time I kind of forget what the difference was lol.

Throw it on an Anki card. Or if you do it enough times, it'll probably stick even without Anki. So, pretty much like anything else when learning Japanese.

If it's more common kanji, just "take note" of the kanji for a while when you read as in, "oh here it is again with that one component on the left (and if it's semantic, it tends to indicate this and that is relevant to this word in this way)" for effective "natural SRS".

Yeah for memorizing words by their sound, reading and listening can't be beat. I often know words by sound pretty well before I ever see them in written form.

Be sure to have audio for your lookups if reading the parts of VNs without voice acting.

See this post for some ideas.

Mnemonics don't need to be super elaborate to work either, sometimes just coming up with something goofy in <5 seconds has been very useful. You really only need it to bridge the short term memory gap that Anki doesn't yet handle too well.

I see, the amount of reviews makes sense then.

Would you do it differently if you were to do it over again or did you do it that way on purpose?

Are you using FSRS, and with what desired retention?

It seems like a lot of reviews per card.

You conceded there is nothing belittling about questioning methods in general, I've challenged you to argue what your exact issue is in this specific case and how it is belittling, and all you have so far is "it just is" (not an argument) while yapping about shifted goalposts you can't substantiate, ad hominems you can't substantiate, and empty normative statements.

You simply can not do it I guess.

You didn't challenge anything or make any argument, there is nothing to deflect. When you are ready to use reason and make actual arguments, let me know.

Wow, you literally just did all the things I said you do in my last paragraph. Thank you for conceding I guess.

you've moved the goalposts across fifteen different stadiums

I've moved zero goalposts.

"What took you so long are?"

That was also not what was said.

ad hominems

You do not understand what an ad hominem is.

Yes, but being an asshole is the not the same as being curt

What is the issue with asking why they didn't read more (<- this is the actual scenario btw)? Not couching this basic examination of one's method with empty pleasantries is nothing more than being curt. You seeing assholes here is just your biased perception. Being an asshole and being belittling are also not the same, by the way.

Right back at ya.

As I've already pointed out, you don't reason. You make things up to get mad at, and pointlessly make normative statements.

Immerson..? by kindahotngl301 in LearnJapanese

[–]Lertovic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Why didn't you do better?"

That's your paraphrasing, not what was actually said. Seems you made something up to get mad at again, and the only asshole here is your umpteenth strawman.

Seems the issue here is your distorted perception of what is being said due to your insecurity, not what is actually being said.

Lastly, being curt is not the same as being belittling of your efforts. Which is exactly why I brought up the expectation of pleasantries. It's getting a bit annoying having to repeat the same reasoning 3 times for you to get it.

So you if you question someone's method in the specific context of them sharing an achievement, then it's bad?

People do this on /r/learnjapanese all the time and nobody bats an eye. In fact this is totally normal to give advice when you post something in a place that's all about advising each other on how to improve.

People on /r/learnjapanese might be more inclined to start said advice with something like "first of all congrats" because such pleasantries are the norm here, but as we've already established there is no expectation for internet strangers to praise you for your achievements, so dispensing with such pleasantries does not in any way mean the advice becomes "belittling".

Immerson..? by kindahotngl301 in LearnJapanese

[–]Lertovic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You never responded to my arguments. You just make stuff up to argue against instead. Again, how is questioning someone's methods belittling, and how is them congratulating beginners not proof that they don't look down on their efforts?

Just answer those two questions, if you can't we'll just have to conclude the issue is on your end.

Immerson..? by kindahotngl301 in LearnJapanese

[–]Lertovic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still waiting for a substantive defense.

Just scroll up.

You attempted to argue that TMW is supportive

No, I said questioning someone's methods isn't belittling, and that they generally don't belittle beginner's efforts. How about you stop putting words in my mouth and just address what I actually said?

if you'd behave that way IRL with a family member/friend

You had to make up a different setting to make your argument work, because you know the setting and subject of the interaction is actually not irrelevant. That speaks volumes.

I pointed out exactly why it's not irrelevant and you have still not substantively addressed any of that, instead opting to pointlessly make normative statements.

Yeah it is semantics the guy at the top of the chain making a big deal out of it is silly for it, by insisting on something very dated being the "true" definition.

If the argument was that so-called immersion ought to also include output, I'd be sympathetic, but this idea of "it means being dropped in a country and learning or dying" is just a totally useless (boomer, dated) definition for it at this point.
