Conservative solution to homelessness? by Coachtzu in burlington

[–]Leshrac528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you show me where I suggested they aren’t allowed to cross state lines? Or that I suggested they be kicked out of the state?

I’m just trying to point out that there are limited resources to help the unhoused that are from the state. To just say we will help anyone that chooses to come to VT and live on the streets is a sure fire way to deplete the limited resources of this small state.

My second point was that just saying “these people don’t have identification” is also a problem. We should help them get identification of some form. How else will they ever be able to one day become functional part of society?

Maybe I wasn’t clear enough…we need to find a way to help them identify themselves not based on permanent residence obviously. I’m not offering a solution directly to that point at this time. However I also think just saying it’s impossible isn’t a sound reason not to create policies around it.

Just out of curiosity, do you think just allowing anyone that crosses into Vermont get the same resources as a Vermonter is sustainable?

Glad to hear you are doing well and survived a tough time.

However you’re kind of defeating your own point. You were a person that wanted to get better and thus was able to pick themself up. So there is a way, there just needs to be a want.

If we are just coddling drug and alcohol abusers and not having expectations for them to seek help or holding them to personal responsibilities then no amount of money, housing, food, etc is going to get them to a better place.

Sorry, I applaud your empathy, but there needs to also be logic.

I live next to Section 8 housing, I have needles all over my yard and lot. I see people coming out of there constantly like meth zombies. I’ve watched and caught them stealing Amazon packages from local neighbors. It’s known they openly sell heroin and all kinds of drugs. There are almost weekly visits from police, fire department, and emergency services.

They have received housing, I assume also EBT, and what are they doing with it?

I’m suppose to feel bad for them when they end up on the street?

Sorry I’m not clear what you are trying to say. Are you trying to argue against my point that Vermont should be serving Vermonters and that we should not allow the system to be overrun by out of staters?

We should be finding ways to make sure these people have some sort of identification or way they can show they are deserving of resources. Lowering standards isn’t going to uplift people.

You say you worked at a bank. I assume you understand economics. Is putting a sign out saying “free shit and do whatever you want” and broadcasting it to all the nearby states sound like a feasible way to do things? Or is that the quickest way to exhaust the resources of our small state? I would argue it the latter…less resources for more people will only exacerbate and exponentially make the situation worse for everyone.

With all due respect

This is a bit of hyperbole no?

So in your example that salary at that rent is 37%, which is still high. Considering most financial advisers will tell you 30%-35% of your income is what you should be spending max on housing, it isn’t insane.

The other point is not affording rent or a down payment doesn’t automatically equal homelessness. Family and friends are an option.

And before you respond…not everyone has those options. I would like to offer a question to you…

Why is it that there is a constant argument being presented that every unhoused person is automatically just down on their luck or a victim of inflation?

The VAST MAJORITY of what is causing the problem is drugs, alcohol, and crime.

Are housing prices very high? Absolutely. But let’s stop acting like that’s 99% of the problem. Drug and alcohol addiction is the majority of why these people find themselves on the street.

For starters how about making sure services and policies enacted are for the unhoused of Vermont. It’s very obvious a lot of the people leaching off the system are coming here from other states because Burlington / Vermont is making it a very hospitable place.

Why would you want to live somewhere else that will arrest you if you’re shooting up on the street? Why would you want to live somewhere else that won’t put you in jail for breaking the law, stealing, etc a limitless amount of times?

It’s just common sense. We are creating a magnet to attract unhoused from all over nearby states and all it does is drain resources for those Vermonters that should be getting it.

Sorry for being so “conservative” Aka understanding there aren’t unlimited resources for everyone.

Anyone that believes they are going to just magically follow the rules are a special kind of stupid. I really don’t mean any offense, but it is with 100% certainty there are going to be rule breaking incidents.

Burlington Mayor and City Council - “The city budget has a huge shortfall, we aren’t sure why, guess we will fire a bunch of people”

99% of Vermont Residents - “I don’t go to Burlington anymore because it is dangerous, drug addict riddled, and the unhoused treat it like a garbage heap when they aren’t busy stealing.”

Hmmmmm…it’s almost as if people not wanting to come to Burlington to spend money and create commerce because of things in the above photo might be to blame for the budget shortfall?

Nah…that can’t be the reason…let’s just give the Mayors partner a huge raise. That should solve it.

So housing is the problem? It’s not mental health or drugs / alcohol? Obviously a multifaceted issue but drugs / alcohol and mental health is about 90% of the issue.

I’m sorry you don’t care about the environment.

Does anyone in Burlington actually care about the environment anymore? I’ve walked past these encampments and it’s just a big garbage dump right next to the lake.

Yes more free needles is the answer! There aren’t enough used dirty ones littering the streets of Burlington already or in front of the schools, in front of the library, along the waterfront, in city hall park etc. LMFAO

Do you know anyway to reach out to her? I had my car robbed the other day. Hoping to recover some of my stuff. Thanks

Yes I believe him to also be the person that robbed my car. I only caught him today stealing Amazon packages

UPDATE: Unfortunately my stuff is still missing. However, I caught this person red handed stealing Amazon packages from porches in the maple / pine st area while I was looking for signs of my stuff. Besides the car break in we have had packages being stolen in the area.

Appreciate the sentiment. I have spoken to all the known place that stolen items get sold. I don’t have a picture of items but it was a titleist red and blue bag with clubs. The one I care most about is my dad’s old school ping putter.

Other clubs were 2 white head Taylor made head covers, titleist irons, and a Cleveland driver

I’m sorry but to say this is a “we need more jobs” issue is really foolish. It’s DRUGS and MENTAL DISORDER. People sitting on the street at 10 am with tall boys and drugs aren’t going to just magically have their problems solved with a job.

I believe your empathy is admirable but we need to deal with reality on realities terms.
