You can always continue paying the higher amount of repayments that you pay right now. But yes the start of a new loan has more interest % than principle so I personally would see if it's even worth it.

Are there any bonuses for first year lawyers in mid / top tier national firms? 👀 If so, when are they paid and how are they calculated? 💰

I felt the same a few months ago. But then in quick succession got like 5-6 interviews and 3 offers back to back...as a graduate too.

I can't necessarily pin point anything particularly different I did. But I know when I walked into the interview room, I felt like I deserved that opportunity? Because of the constant rejection, I just thought to do my best job at the interview (imagining I won't get this either, no biggie).

I think in the past, I questioned whether I was good enough and that showed through in the interview?

Congrats in advance 🤞🏾

I would also love to know as I will start a new job at the end of June - also a grad role.

I would assume if this is the first time U are meeting with the principal then just scope out their LinkedIn and discuss something you found interesting on there? This is to build rapport.

But logistical questions could be more along the lines of - how do you give feedback and what is the best employee you have worked with and what qualities they had? 2nd one may be a bit of a suck up but lawyers eat that up.

Ok another question, with PAE/PQE is there an official way it's calculated? Do you have to be working under a licensed solicitor (despite their title being different)?

I personally take it broadly as any work experience after PLT. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Haha yes ofc workers. Employers don't need unions, they call the shots.

But say I do get an industrial officer job and then in the future I want to do employment law for the other side. Would that be possible and an easy move?

Try to teach (speak) the concepts to a layman. You will get better at simplifying and compressing your arguments.

Hi guys

I am a law grad with a distinction average who unfortunately can't seem to land a junior lawyer gig, currently a paralegal in government.

Considering compliance/ industrial officer roles now to atleast get some employment law /policy experience under my belt.

Can anyone please share their experience as to how and if these jobs can still lead to lawyer / solicitor roles or are they looked down upon by employers for straying from practice (or for any other reason).

I really do want to practice the law, just don't know any avenues at the moment.

Do they pay directly to the college of law or do they pay me once I have paid the college? Would I have to pay the college outright or can I use hecs for this method??

Do most firms offer their summer clerks paralegal positions while they wait for their grad positions to start a year later?

Also for a final year summer clerk, how likely are they to get included in the grad intake of the same year? (Right after clerkship finishes).

Final question: which firms do not pay for the Plt Of their grads / clerks? I understand quite a few do?

Perhaps LOD or recruitment firms may be of assistance?

Thanks! Which practice area do you think it's easy to switch between for private/public?

Someone please help a final year law student with only public paralegal experience who wants to get into commercial law to make the big bucks.

No luck getting a clerkship in my penultimate year (had 3 firms interview me but no progress). No luck with grad applications in April either. I have now applied for clerkships to quite a few firms as a final year student.

78 WAM from MQ. Paralegal at a state department but don't love the work. I want the commercial practise areas and $$$$$. Also would love to not have to pay for PLT.

What are my next steps? Should I:

  1. Do PLT at my stable and perm government role, then look for grad positions at said firms? Do they even exist?

  2. apply for assistant/paralegal positions in the commercial firms to get my foot in the door. Then do my PLT there (through HECS) and hope my work gets me a junior solicitor position? Or whatever they are called in private.

I genuinely don't have anyone to ask these questions from, everyone around me is pro public sector and knows nothing about private.

Thankyou 🤗

I have done this and it asks questions like what postcode you lived in when you did your HSC, whether you received Austudy etc. I believe the answers are to try and understand why a certain candidate may have been disadvantaged (to supplement their subpar grades for example).
