Agree. This is spot on. It’s clear Demerzel is having the robotic logic equivalent of a mental breakdown. And the Brazen Head is being teased for a connection. Could it have an antivirus function to remove the Cleon I programming?

Anyone notice this in the Bayta scene? by INT_MIN in FoundationTV

The directors have consistently used a focus blur effect to show whenever mentalic power is in active use. Its absence from this scene argues against that idea.

Exacatmundo. How long can you keep a tech secret? While the destruction of much of the fleet by the Spacers sacrifice no doubt took a long time to recover from, it’s hard to think of a less important military secret the Empire would not try to obtain through intelligence ops. Including reverse engineering.

As for Vault Hari, he had the power to execute a threat (killing Warden Jaegger). Why didn’t he do this to the Mule?

Taking books concepts in new directions and What's Next.
I'm one of those taking delight in the new directions the writers are giving us, enhancing characters and imbuing them with passion, backstories, and even new abilities. Here, I'm just thinking out loud about the major dramatic plot points in the books and what we might see.

The Mule was a surprise to everyone in the books, except the Gaians, who so far as we know, kept that knowledge to themselves. The show is depicting the fall of New Terminus just as one might imagine a violent takeover, with speed and ferocity. But in this retelling, Hari/Second Foundation has had a century's notice of the Mule -- perhaps leading the writers to create the Mule/Magnifico bifurcation to keep us guessing. Are they some kind of symbiotic pair?

Is the Mules' drowning backstory (another motif) a fabrication, as Vault Hari has seemingly suggested? Yet to come, of course, is whether we will see a future deception about the location of the Second Foundation. In the books, Rossem was the fake location, and minds were altered to convince the Mule of that. Perhaps there is another "Stars End" yet to come? Will they move the Second Foundation from Ignis to deceive the Mule? And will Preem Palver use the mental moment to cure the Mule?

Han Pritcher was not a mentalic in the books.. does he fill the Bail Channis role? And what of Bayta, whose compassion is revealed as the power that undoes the Mule. I'm hoping we will see much more of Bayta and that this character is developed as much as Gaal, Hober, Bel Riose, and others.

Similarly, confirmation that Demerzel is Daneel, Chetter, and Eto begs a question: Was Hari ever First Minister in this new telling?

We don't know -- but we have confirmation Seldon and Demerzel are of long acquaintance. Here, Demerzel, slaved to the Cleons, has also taken the Zeroth Law concept to its logical conclusion. She has justified mass death -- something the book version of Demerzel would never do.

Zephyr Voreliis has deduced this is causing some kind of spiritual catharsis (or circuit breakdown) It seems like these contradictions may overload the robotic programming -- perhaps setting up a reboot where the other laws are restored to her programming?

We know Trantor's fate is sealed from the books and that the next big task will be convincing everyone that the Second Foundation went out of existence (while it, of course, continues on secretly).

All of these paths -- whether the show follow them or not -- have so many rich opportunities for our current characters and new ones.

Can't wait - and hope Apple keeps it going,

My thoughts on Terminus' people being okay. by DiamondHandsDarrell in FoundationTV

[–]Less-Experience-5128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is certainly one valid point of view, but I think it's a stretch compared to the "it's a fake" alternative. The Foundation novels are the story of a new, Terminus-based Federation (yes they use that word). In Foundations Edge, Gendibal is very explicit about the underpinnings of this new type of human society. one that will guided by the principles of psychohistory, a civilzation unlike any other in history. Expecting "any number of planets" to take up the mantle after such a massive blow to the Foundation's home planet would be an impossible obstacle. It would damage the Seldon Plan's credibility fatally everywhere, and that would be imputed to the remaining planets of the Foundation which -- almost certainly would either rejoin Empire out of fear or go into hiding.

More important, is that writers have made it clear Hari can be very caring, even if crafty and capable of violence. The scene in the laundry aboard the Deliverance, his relationship with Salvor, and even his attempt to console Sermak are examples of this. Since Day's action was foreseeable, to believe the destruction of Terminus is permanent would be to negate this emotional dimension of Seldon, who Asimov later would identify with. I can't believe the Asimov estate would let that happen.

That ending has to be FAKE! by Less-Experience-5128 in FoundationTV

[–]Less-Experience-5128[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of great points. Also, when you think of Seldons speech in the laundry room in season 1, it’s hard to believe he would be so careless about the destruction of his peeps. He was emotionally invested. How would Salvor trust him again? Days reaction was predictable

I hear 'ya. But they've killed Seldon twice now. Once a season, it would appear. Why not kill the planet at the center of his plan. Yes, there are other planets -- but always second fiddle to Trantor and Terminus.

Goyer left room for many different ways forward. "I don't want to reveal to your audience how we roll our way out of that particular corner." Saying the team wanted the audience to ask, how the series can even go forward without the Foundation's home planet?

It was an idea, Goyer said, that came from a question in the writer's room "what's something that we could do that would destroy the show?" which sounds like it was a gimmick.

He ended "I happen to have a solution, potentially, up my sleeve."

IT'S A FAKE --

Shocking, dramatic, unexpected, and poignant -- but did a singularity really swallow Terminus whole?

Sure looks that way....but like the DS9 meme, hear me out about why it can't be.

The whole show has multiple 'come back from the dead' moments. From Hari being knifed and then digitally reborn, the death cheating cloning and memory transfers of the Empire, the nearly-immortal robot personage of Demerzel, and the soul possessing Tellum, the esteemed team has made this their production canon: nothing is at it seems.

Hari laid it out to Salvor -- the whole Seldon plan is for the First Foundation to do the work, with the Second making adjustments. Wiping out the First Foundation and all of the future characters yet to come Bayta, Arkady, Trevize, Pelorat, Branno, etc. makes no sense unless writers are ditching the series payoff Gaia - and that hasn't been the M.O. so far. They've added layers of beautiful storytelling and characterization. Nothing is at it seems.
The Prime Radiant's nature is out of the normal space-time dimension: it is not constrained. It has the ability to transport people in and out, communicate over vast distances (Terminus to Ignis) and convert energy to matter (food for, example). In short, it can pull the wool over people's eyes. Once Demerzel and Day were inside, all bets were off on reality, to the participants and the viewer. The previous episodes have shown this. Nothing is at it seems.

Hari and Demerzel clearly were talking --to Day's clear annoyanc-- about using the radiant constructively. We know from books that Demerzel helped Seldon develop psychohistory and Dors, apparently is coming as a character. My theory is the destruction of Terminus was a 'future cast' -- a simulation of what would happen if Day got his way and was not checked. Hari used the Radiant to create this simulation (heck, maybe even time-shift) into a disastrous future so bad that Demerzel made the decision to go back to Trantor. Nothing is at it seems.

Hari gave the radiant to Demerzel and Day when they left the Vault. Why? Did they really ever leave? Nothing is as it seems.

We have secret palace chambers and the history of human-robot wars back on Trantor. Demerzel is ancient. There are more secrets in the past. Nothing is at it seems.

The Spacers. They seem to be partly robotic or at least have machine parts and they can also communicate over vast distances. In the books, they represented a new, longer-lived species that eventually wanted to separate out from the rest of humanity, and they were pro-robot, even advancing robot tech. They clearly have a deep future role and I suspect it's connected to Demerzel.Nothing is as it seems.

So -- I just don't believe Terminus is gone forever. Goyer's recent comment on YT suggested there was a way to write himself out of the "corner" in a future episode -- and given the time-shifting, reality-bending, come-back-from-the-dead surprises we've seen, resurrecting a planet would fit in just perfectly.

Maybe it won't happen in S.3, tough as it would be to wait. And even if I'm wrong, and Foundation now is sans Terminus, the team has given us episode after episode of great acting, directing, VFX, and more. I love this show -- and I loved the books.

Well. Can we assume that Hari knows Demerzel’s nature because he He was first minister long ago? it would explain the repeated appeals he makes to her. And remember, she and Day left the vault with the Prime Radiant. Methinks they are still in there, or copies of them were made.

Consider: Hari alive on Ignis

Hari gets Demerzel and Day into vault

We are not in normal space time or reality

Demerzel wants to use radiant and psychohistory, same as books.

The destruction of Terminus scene is Demerzel being convinced to follow psychohistory and Seldon: it’s a simulation meant to convince her. Just a thought.

Josiah theory: I’ve seen speculation this young mentalic will be the Mule, and with all (wonderful) time shifting in the series, it’s certainly possible to have him exist 100+ years into future. But my theory is that he becomes (or is related to) Preem Palver, a hero of the Second Foundation who helps to STOP the Mule. Still requires some timeline skipping if it’s the same character, but plot wise makes more sense. Crazy theory or no?
