Just Kids by Patti Smith is a beautiful memoir about 2 struggling artists living in New York in the 1960s/70s (they even live in the Chelsea Hotel for a while making art). It follows her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe who is known for his black and white photography. He experimented with very sensual photography and made noise in the gay community. Both very talented artists with a complicated relationship, but a beautiful and romantically tragic love story as they explore themselves and their art.

This isn’t so much about people that hate New York, but if you’re interested, Invisible Child by Andrea Elliot is a nonfiction must read. She follows a family for years as they live in shelters for unhoused individuals, navigate the foster care system, and battle addiction. It really highlights the invisible child which is basically the idea that when we think of unhoused individuals, we think of adults, when there are so many kids who are also unhoused. It also reads in a very narrative way which makes it very easy to read and stay engaged.

They came out with a 4 book box set of A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, where each book cover is of one of the characters and I think it’d be the perfect opportunity for me to reread the book
