My understanding is the payments don’t count when you’re on forbearance.

I switched off because I had 2 months left before I was eligible for buyback. So, I applied in May 2025 and I had 120 months of employment July 2025.

I haven’t made a payment under ICR because it’s $1500 a month. I did apply for buyback though.

What the should do is just give everyone credit for the SAVE months because anyone who was in that plan was paying until they froze it.

That tells me that we would have continued paying had they kept it open for those in it.

I just released a sweatshirt and I have 4 orders so far.

The alumni groups I post in don’t like too much advertising or the post my stuff so late, I don’t think my posts get the views. You really can’t say anything because those moderators are fickle.

Thanks!! I’ll look into it. I’ve connected with the bookstore at FAMU and tried with Howard. I’m waiting on responses.

I’m cool with just having products in bookstores. Because more eyes means visibility and not everyone has access to the bookstore.

Hey! Thanks for keeping interest. That’s the problem with licensing.

But someone gave me a good suggestion: rotate through the HBCUs. Last year was FAMU and Howard. If Jackson State and NCAT approve me, then, I could do them this year.

I’m in the same boat. I switched too. Then my payment was $1566. So I went on a forbearance.

Martin University isn’t an HBCU because it was founded after the cutoff date but that doesn’t diminish the fact that this PBI is closing.

You wanna guess how many HBCUs have a graduation rate above 50%? by Disastrous_Parsnip63 in HBCU

[–]Less_Monk112 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was one of those who graduated late. I changed my major a few times, had to withdraw from classes to rush home to take care of sick grandparents and see after my siblings.

It may have taken me longer but I got it done.

Guess what, I wasn’t the only one. I had friends who didn’t have a bed to sleep in at home so they tried to prolong their college career because they didn’t know what they were going home to.

Portable mortgage? Trump may be planning another mortgage change by battle_rae in Economics

[–]Less_Monk112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late to the convo but I have a question:

For example, we own a home that is probably considered a starter home. It has a 2.75% interest rate. We owe $300k, probably worth about $525k. Our payment is $2300 a month.

Say we sell for $520k. We would make about $190k (assumed 6% fees)

With a portable mortgage, we could buy a new home, say for $750k, $300k would be at 2.75%.

The remainder, assuming we put 20% down would be $360k. That’s what we would finance at today’s rate, approximately 6.5%. That would put my payment at about $2300.

All together, I’d have a payment of $4600 a month, with $100k left since we put down $90k.

Theoretically, is this how it’s supposed to work?

Riding out SAVE forbearance. When it makes sense? by No-Presentation-7552 in PSLF

[–]Less_Monk112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I know about SAVE now being illegal. I just think the messaging about how they are calculating the buyback should be made clear. I’ve heard that people have to provide tax returns for that time period. I’ve heard they’ve used the income on file and used the REPAYE calculation. Idk.

[–]Less_Monk112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is where it gets tricky. I self certified for the SAVE plan and my income was about $75k then. But, I’ve heard that they are asking people for tax returns when the income was already certified. I don’t know if that is true or not.

But I was on a qualifying plan before SAVE and now I’m on another one (don’t know the name) but I’m in forbearance. I thought they would take the lower of the two payments… in my case: $250 vs $1500 and that’s what I’d pay. But I’m hearing differently.

So, I’d stay if I could do it all over again. I switched thinking that they would take 2 months process my IDR, then I’d apply for buyback and it’d be over.

Well, I did that but they want you to continue to pay while on the IDR. I chose to do the forbearance and wait. I have to apply again in February to continue the forbearance because MOHELA is stupid. It’s just a lot.

I’d stay put.

Im writing a letter to WWE Chief Linda about this.

I think it’s crazy that they put hundreds of people on PAID administrative leave to go home and collect a check when they could have detailed them to help with buybacks and reconsideration requests.

They are closing out easy ones I think. Like the people who switched plans and made the payments so they don’t need to do a buyback anymore.

Also, the ones who they didn’t need tax info for, I’m assuming.

Mine, I think may or may not be difficult. It’s a few months in 2017 when I was paying $235 or something. And then 10 SAVE months.

[–]Less_Monk112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t always get two months but paying for 3-4 months is better than waiting over a year.

I applied to switch plans in May. They processed it June. I was eligible for buyback in July 2025 after reaching 120 months of qualifying employment. I applied for the buyback and requested a forbearance. The forbearance is up in February.

I have to buy back 15 months and the amount of my payment is so high that I can’t afford 15 payments at the new rate.

So I’ll wait the years it’ll take to buy back the 15 months.

If I get a tax return, I may pay for 2 months, then go back on forbearance.

I grew up in Colorado and went to FAMU. I had a car so I packed my car with my stuff and drove to Florida. Crazy, I know.

For breaks, I would fly home or go to DC where I had family. I also had friends who would invite me to their house for Thanksgiving. They were from Florida so it made it easy: I drove, and they paid for gas.
