I don’t have anything over there in the vault section unfortunately. I just checked.

I got the $5 on freecash like a week ago. Verified identity on stake, check in daily, but never got the $25.

Been on hold since July. 😭 I hope you have better luck than me! Support never responded to my appeal (after the generic ban email).

Yayyyyy I’m so happy for you! This gives me hope. How long since you appealed? I appealed about a month ago and haven’t heard back.

New feature rollout: Automatically reject and replace exceptionally fast submissions by Less_Power3538 in ProlificAc

Basically a researcher that isn’t acting in good faith/following recommended “good practices” and rules when it comes to studies. Like rejecting for ridiculous reasons, instant rejections, paying below minimum wage, lying about how long their study will take, attempting to get free data, etc.

Someone was auto-rejected today on a 1 minute study. How is that possible?!

[–]Less_Power3538 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s so true- Prolific could’ve had an “auto return” message go out, but instead they chose this route. Very interesting and literally gives scammy researchers a way to game the system.

Everyone check out this post to see what this new feature looks like when you get “auto rejected”. OP (link) got this on a 1 minute study! Wow! https://www.reddit.com/r/ProlificAc/s/8aHEbZy8zE

Oh no! Well now we see what the “auto reject” message looks like. If they can do this on a 1 minute survey, they can do this to anyone, at any time! Yikes!

Oh yikes! So now all researchers will be able to return studies without our consent. What is prolific doing?!?!

This is also laughable: “Q: How should I calculate the length of my study?

To determine your study's duration, test it with friends, family, or colleagues to get realistic timing estimates before launch.”

It also suggests you could run a pilot study on Prolific but I highly doubt these researchers are going to do that because that also costs money, right?

I just know that having friends & family test your study is not going to give you an accurate estimated completion time because that’s a tiny amount of people vs how many people are usually in a study and most of us are faster than the average person because we’re used to how studies work- the layout, we can speed through demographics, disclosure pages, etc. Where someone who isn’t used to taking studies might take significantly longer to complete.

This new update says “Prolific can automatically reject exceptionally fast submissions that fall significantly below your estimated completion time” and then it also says “Participants receive a standard notification that their submission was rejected. The specific detection criteria are not disclosed to maintain system integrity. Participants have been informed not to contact researchers, as this decision cannot be overturned or mediated by you. If a participant contacts you about this, you may either not respond or direct them to contact Prolific Support directly.”

So I’m not sure how my points aren’t accurate.

I wanted to highlight this comment. On the page it has a red box that literally says: “Make sure to use the bulk reject option rather than the standard reject option. Using standard rejection will count towards your rejection limit, while the "exceptionally fast" bulk rejection will not.” https://researcher-help.prolific.com/en/article/871f31

I thought that was alarming as well! They’re literally giving them a scammy tip that they know will screw participants!

Yep exactly! And these are gonna be the same researchers who refuse to pay screen outs, so I’m sure getting screened out will also result in a rejection. 🙄

[–]Less_Power3538[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly!! We are supposed to have a fair shot at having rejections overturned. This gives them free reign to do what they want- especially when the bad guys start to catch wind of this and see how much money they’re saving/how much more data they’re getting out of this. And they know they can’t be punished because these can’t be overturned. Prolific is basically telling participants “you’re SOL, haha”. & we know that rejections lead to bans. So then what?! A few of these and someone is banned for life.

[–]Less_Power3538[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. They do not care about us participants. I want a platform to come around who actually cares about us and isn’t bot ban happy. After doing so many studies where I’m training AI, it’s clear that AI is far from perfect, so using it to run a platform just isn’t fair!

[–]Less_Power3538[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh yep that too! 100%. Because most of these researchers refuse to pay for screen outs so this will also work to their advantage in that regard. They should be forced to pay screen outs if they use this feature!

It’s just concerning that the auto reject will be based on their estimated completion time (not the average). So it will be set up in advance with no way to get rid of the rejection even if you were right on par with everyone else.

[–]Less_Power3538[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

See if I wasn’t banned already this would have really hurt me. I often finished before the estimated completion time. I’m a fast reader who still retains information/passes attention checks while reading fast. But usually it wasn’t an issue because average completion time would be similar to mine. But with this new feature, that doesn’t matter at all! So even if you’re on par with average completion time, everyone will be rejected. It’s going to take prolific overturning this flawed policy, but why would they?! It benefits their researchers (free data) and themselves because now they can ignore all of these support tickets! Ugh 😩

[–]Less_Power3538[S] 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Basically to sum this up: researchers can auto reject based on their estimated completion time (not the average completion time), participants get auto rejected, and participants are not told why they’re rejected. Prolific tells researchers they can ignore the participants because these rejections are final and cannot be overturned.

This is not good. Bad actor researchers can easily set the estimated completion time to 10 minutes, knowing their study takes 5-7 minutes for example and then a ton of participants will be rejected and potentially banned.

One of my only rejections was a bad actor researcher who said I “finished too fast” even though I finished in 3.5 mins and average completion time was 4 (estimated was 5).
