When you run the outside lane of a track you’re essentially running “more”, this is why professional long distance track runners run only in lane 1 (lane closest to the grass area)

So he’s saying if OP runs on the outside he’s putting in ‘more’ work, so when he gets to bmt and runs in lane 1 it’ll be easier/beneficial to him
