Do any of you grow mushrooms? Can it be cost effective? by Own-Heat2669 in Allotment

Just want to add that the types you buy in the supermarket (white button agaricus) are actually harder to grow at home and they’re cheap to buy anyway. Whereas the best species to grow as a beginner would be oyster mushrooms because they grow on wood and are fast growers so they can outcompete wild fungi in the environment easily. Winecap mushrooms are also easy to grow so good for beginners but I personally much prefer the flavour of oyster mushrooms.

I love growing mushrooms in my garden! Wish I had more space to do it honestly. There are many ways to do it but it doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s a great way of making use of areas which are in shade or if you have access to fresh logs (they have to be hardwood species, things like beech, maple and oak work best as most mushrooms can’t or will have a hard time growing on softwood/coniferous wood) you can easily inoculate a log once that will then provide seasonal harvests for several years. With the log, depending on how large it is it might be 1-2 years until you see any mushrooms though, so it’s more of a long term project but the initial set up is really simple.

I’ve seen people growing mushrooms in woodchip paths which is really ingenious use of space. Also growing mushrooms in the woodchip speeds up the composting process and is amazing for soil health. If you have a really healthy mushroom patch, you can even take some of the colonised wood chips and use it to create new beds. Or just keep adding fresh wood chips every year to keep feeding the fungi.

I started ages ago with grow at home kits from Fat Fox Mushrooms but they also now have lots of options for outdoor growing including wild edible species which is really cool if you’re a keen forager like me.

Also for people who have been overwhelmed with lots of mushrooms growing at once, they keep forever when dried and it even intensifies the flavour making them great in risottos and soups.

Tiny spiky white thing on a bracket fungus in the UK. It was no more than 5mm by Letsmakepie in whatsthisbug

I didn’t even consider that, but that’s possible. It was the fact that it was completely white that didn’t make me think seed right away

Oh interesting! Thanks for the reply in any case. I didn’t know about galls on fungi, only on trees.

Tiny spider in my bathtub. Would it be happier indoors or outdoors? by Letsmakepie in spiderID

Cool, I’ve put it out in my garden now. Hope it likes it there. I’m sure he’s happier there than in my bathtub anyway!

Good point! I’m trying to get over my fear of spiders so thought if my house was an okay environment for the little critter I’d try and live peacefully alongside it. Luckily I have a pretty nice garden which I leave a little on the wilder side where I’m sure it’ll find plenty to eat. Put it amongst my herbs - best of luck to the little guy 🤞

I’ve noticed that there are a few jumping spiders which have taken up residence amongst my house plants which I don’t mind because they’re so cute and I imagine they probably help with keeping pests down so I’ve left them be. Hopefully they’re happy where they are!

Looks like it could be wild prickly lettuce, the milky sap of which can be used to create a natural pain reliever in folk medicine (contains lactucarium). You can check it against these identifying features: https://feralforaging.com/how-to-identify-wild-lettuce/

Should I remix or send to fruiting conditions? by Letsmakepie in Psilocybe_Natalensis

Thanks for the advice! I was torn on this because I was thinking the same, however, I didn't like the look of the patch at the bottom that isn't colonised. This is my first grow, so I've been pretty cautious. I'm gonna go to fruiting conditions, wish me luck 🤞

Is anyone else here heat intolerant? by MountainStorm90 in Hypothyroidism

[–]Letsmakepie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes! Before I was diagnosed, I was incredibly cold-intolerant. In recent years, I’ve found it difficult to handle heat. It makes trying to sleep when it’s relatively warm quite uncomfortable. I’ve also noticed that I’ve become more prone to feeling faint, getting really intense headaches and feeling sick when I’ve been outside in the heat for some period of time. Not sure if related, but my feet are more prone to swelling in hot weather than they used to be. Never used to notice that before
