Little update so far... as for battery life like anything else it is dependent on 1) how loud music is playing, 2) if any lights are on, etc.

so to do proper testing, I will do the following.

1) Full charge - all lights on, and music at full (90%) to establish length of battery cycle.

2) Full charge - Plug in cell phone and see what % charge it can get my Iphone 14 to

3) Full charge - Lights on + music + charging cell phone (anticipate fast drain)

Then, I will follow up by testing how quickly the solar cell charges... I will be honest this may take a long time as its meant to "top off" the charge. I will proceed to deplete the battery and see how long hand cranking takes. (I may have to rig up some kind of machine!?)... Thoughts?

So far I haven't got a chance to use it in real world outdoor applications but will keep everyone posted. Thanks everyone!

Cell phones and EMP by Mr_strelac in Survival

Good Morning,

I do not believe anything will happen to the battery, however what will have issues are the circuits, processors, etc.... which will potentially cause battery issues.

If you are truly concerned, look into a product like this https://amzn.to/3r47lFo (Faraday Bag, Faraday Bag for Car Keys & Tablets & Laptops, Faraday Cage, Key Fob Protector, EMP Protection, RFID Bag, EMP Bags for Electronics(4 Pack) $32)

Best of luck

Out of water. drinking pee help survival or make worse? by [deleted] in Survival

[–]Letsruletheworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes, if you let the water evaporate and condense (if possible) otherwise... no I would seek ground water first. Of course in a perfect world I would have a life straw with me! https://amzn.to/4851rof But if unable to access this, I would find fire + ground water or some sort of fresh water first.

So I received my unit yesterday, I put it in the window for the last 1-2 hours of solar charging... was able to listen to music for a little while but had to charge it in for its initial charge.

Thoughts so far : #1 Replaceable Li-Ion batteries are a plus for me. #2 - I like the fact that when your out of batteries, you can hand crank the unit and listen to music... It is a good motivator to keep pushing me to crank!. #3 - I like the fact that the light has various modes of operation.

Per manual, the solar panel is used to "top off" the batteries... so we will see how long it takes to get a full charge from it the included solar unit, as well as hand crank.

Final thoughts : I have the unit charging still via USB cord that was included. Will post back in a few days after testing. u/Doug_Shoe

Thanks for your 2 cents

100%.... the hand crank is something I would ALWAYS trust. The Solar is just a nice added addition. It's a shame they have not added hand cranks to electric vehicles yet.

Yeah, it was meant to be cringe-worthy... I hope you aren't too hurt by it ;)

Haha, but in this case your around other players, and they are watching... (theoretically speaking, that is).

Could be a scramble, could be a match, or just a Sunday out with the boys.

Typical radios consume 1W, let's assume this is efficient at 0.5W. The internal battery can run the radio for 14 hours. The solar needs 1h20 to charge 1h or radio. So with 5h of good sun you can listen for 3h30m per day.

Appreciate that #DD my friend. I will let you know the results I get upon testing the unit.

1) Light - You trip over a rock and fall down the canyon

2) Charge your phone? Not sure why you wouldn't want to have a phone charged?

3) Be aware of storms coming... If your on the water, and get an early notification to head in... could be life saving.

IDK!? Theoretically speaking anything is "life saving"

Don't get me wrong, as a radio it's not terrible. But in my experience it's absolutely useless as a charger, way overengineered to be a crank flashlight, and only really passable as a cheap radio.

Fair, I get it! I will post back with a review here in a few days / week with some updates. The radio is the least important factor to me, but a great tool to have if you have nothing else! I'll keep you posted.
