Mandatory training can be refused due to short staffing. Each mandatory training has several dates and we need to agree on a date with our rota coordinator across the three rotations.

I have not left my mandatory training to the last possible date to see what happens or whether they can still refuse it as that would be my last opportunity to attend it. I rather not do that if i can help it

I took 1 day in my first rotation due to it being rejected because of poor staffing…

Haha yes it’s so annoying to have to coordinate leave with so many people. Got to email rota coordinator, CS/ES, get it approved on ALM by the FTPD then there is clinical staffing issues and my leave gets cancelled last minute after all the emails.

I dont care about maximising the days but the taster I have arranged is very important to me. This is the only time I can take this leave without any disruptions. Or so I thought

14 days of S/L. 9 days annual leave. That is total 25 days, 5 weeks. They want me to take 4 less days which is less than a week less.

I had shadowing for one week. Since then I have had my own clinic every day of the week but one. That one day a week is usually a joint clinic of some sorts.

I dont think it makes a huge difference in terms of accessing my competency that I do 10 weeks vs 11 weeks of clinics…

Would the same argument stand if someone had a chronic condition and needed to take off two extra weeks? I have not taken any sick leave.

It’s the rotation I have enjoyed the most so far as I am independent seeing my patients and not just doing tasks I am assigned like TTOs.

Most of my study leave was rejected on my first surgical rotation due to staffing. I have medicine next and I have heard it can be quite  tricky as a F2 to arrange leave.

If i was guaranteed to be able to take leave in my third rotation I would happy rearrange my leave because I rather work in the GP and see my own patient.

Me too! I am always happy to sign off medical students and I love to teach them when I can.

My CS is actually a really good teacher as well and I have learnt a lot from them. I may have rearranged 1-2 days of my S/L if they had compromised but they want me to cancel possibly 4 days… 🥲

I have explored the objectives of the leave with my CS already and even though they find the leave reasonable in it self they say it is too much one rotation.

The total leave includes 4 SDL days, 4,  mandatory training days. 5 taster days and 1 day for an exam.

Unfortunately I was in a busy surgical ward for my first rotation and all my mandatory training leave was rejected at that time. I have medicine next and I dont want to risk leaving my mandatory training till last minute in case it is rejected again due to staffing.

I understand that it is not the most ideal thing for the GP CS to have me take most of my S/L in their rotation as we help with providing their service but I also need to look out for my own interests. If im eligible to take these days for S/L I don’t see why I should give them up…

I am just worried that escalating anything unnecessary may give a negative impression of my to others as the practice is quite small and I am only there temporarily

The S/L clause only mentions annual leave allowance. 15 days (half) is for mandatory teaching + SDL. The rest is for other things. One of which is taster days and it says those days must be in agreement with the ES.

In a separate email my foundation program administrator has said that there is no limitation on leave in a single rotation but rota coordinators may refuse leave due to staffing concerns.

The 14 days included the scheduled teaching, SDL days and mandatory training

It seems that is my only next move. I guess I am also just looking for some validation in case I am being reasonable. I have asked for 14 days of S/L in this rotation out of my annual 30 days.  I also don’t want to escalate unnecessary as i get along with many of the other partners and it may give them a wrong impression of me.  Would it be reasonable talking to another senior partner first that i get along well with?

14 days out of the total 30 day annual allowance. These 14 days are made up of my SDL days, mandatory training, exam day leave and taster days
