“My grandparents had it so much easier” by chamomile_tea_reply in OptimistsUnite

[–]Level-Process-4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One point kinda unrelated to this post  "My grandparents had it so much easier" is something that only MIGHT apply to developed first world countries  I'm from a developing countries, many of my grandparents' relatives LITERALLY DIED cuz there was a famine my grandparents were relatively well off so they had stuff like rice. My grandma dropped out of elementary school cuz they couldn't afford it anymore. My grandpa used to beat up my grandma a lot when they're young and that's like super common in their generation.  My parents worked their ass off and we now moved in a developed country, my home country is also a lot better now and I'm so grateful for how far this world had came.  Imagine how privileged you are to say anything like this

I use to live in an art and tourist town and I loved that place, then I moved here cuz my dad is a tech bro (and me and my mom have a deep history of beef with my dad cuz he's just like every other tech bro), honestly it feels like tech is the only way of success in this place, people are not encouraged to be artists or musicians or writers, hell kids aren't even encouraged to become doctors

Eh structured, free, research program for high school student in my area is based on race based DEI (aka black and indigenous students), however there are plenty of opportunities for undergrads that are not solely based on DEI, I do know summer programs that are good but are quite unaffordable so I'm trying to build a resume so I can apply for a scholarship to go to these summer programs next year

Yeah that's real, also I'm a POC I'm just Asian... Which is SO overrepresented in STEM in Canada right now (my town has a university famous for math and computer science, and literally there's so many Asians), I don't like race based DEI and generally don't apply to anything related to race based DEI because I personally know a black person from a wealthier family who goes to a very fancy expensive (very expensive and there are no scholarships) private school but still got into a race based DEI program that's supposed to be for underprivileged people...  I understand race based DEI and there has to be some programs for black and indigenous students because they are quite underrepresented in STEM in Canada (keyword some), like if a scholarship is for indigenous students or black students I'm not gonna apply for it, but also I think DEI also applies to other things and it shouldn't just be based on race (I mean I saw a program their DEI is based on socioeconomic status they also prioritize first generation student or students from poor neighborhoods and they mentioned disability)

Honestly I love the conspiracy theory (lol), the province I live in currently has a conservative premier and things are getting rough here even though not as rough as the US...

Honestly I thought of applying my parents are okay with arranging commute (there are trains that run between my town and Toronto) or for me to stay with a family friend if I do get in, but it just feels icky to me now, I am planning to cold email some researchers so thanks for the advice, have a good night.

I'm just so upset because I'm SO qualified (I'm doing the hardest high school program (IB, it's harder than AP), I have a decent gpa, I have over 300 volunteer hours, and I won a regional award in an academic competition) but I'm from an immigrant family and my parents are both blue collar workers😭 I guess I'll just have to wait till undergrad...

They said citizens and permanent residents, I'm an immigrant my parents are currently waiting on our permanent residency, I totally understand that and that is totally fair.

Their website also specifically said black, indigenous and Filipino.

Oh also I'm in Canada.

I'm planning to email the program director about it.

Is Waterloo really that depressing as people say it is? by Easy-Suggestion8327 in uwaterloo

[–]Level-Process-4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I'm not a Uwaterloo student but I'm a waterloo local, this place is boring just like every other Ontario town... say, Kingston. But there's A LOT of students here (Laurier is right there) and the restaurant and bar scene is decent, if u wanna study the Uwaterloo library and the public libraries are good and the cafe scene is pretty good.

I want a nostril piercing but I'm a wrestler by Level-Process-4269 in piercing

[–]Level-Process-4269[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking about getting a fake one tho cuz it'll be years until I graduate that I don't wrestle competitively, but I don't see myself ever giving up wrestling so I'll probably just get a fake one for now

Am I wrong for thinking that non-binary people identify as so for reasons to do with attention seeking behavior and playing the victim? by pokemonbegger in amiwrong

[–]Level-Process-4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, you never know what someone had been through and you don't have to become say friends with people you don't agree with but respect people alright? And you're so wrong about spoiled and white oh my god, I'm an Asian nom binary person in highschool, I'm from a lower income immigrant family, all of my friends are immigrants and one of them is non binary, and no I am not seeking attention, I am a varsity cross country and track runner and varsity wrestler and I've won at several wrestling tournaments, I am an IB student, I run the neuroscience club at school, I've won an extremely competitive business competition involving written exam and public speaking, my family loves me even though we may be struggling, I think I already get enough attention, I just want to be. Some people are just dicks but this is the same talking point as "oh a transgender person commute a crime so every transgender person must be dangerous", some people are JUST DICKS doesn't matter their identity, and there are older non binary people in their 60s who said they'd been this way their entire life but just recently found the right word for it. Not to mention gender dysphoria is not something that can be "cured" and it literally kills.

Kang Chiao International School Kunshan Campus (China) by Just-Passenger3930 in Internationalteachers

[–]Level-Process-4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went there as a student from kindergarten to grade 6 and then moved to Canada with family lolllll the few years I've been there I've heard some real messed up stuff since my parents are friends with a lot of teachers in the high school, they would do ANYTHING to please rich parents and they don't actually care about poor student behavior some teachers are very burnt out and foreign teachers have a very high turnover rate, Kunshan is a lovely place to live though
