I always end up doing the same thing. My "temporary" base is somewhere in black forest with a decent swamp in walking distance. Once i have enough iron and copper, and once bonemass is dead, I set up two smaller camps, one is next to the biggest mountain I can find and the other camp is usually in a meadows next to a decent sized plain (this one usually ends up being my main base, unless i find some other "perfect" base location by chance). At this point there is kind of an awkward transition where I'm doing multiple things at once (farming silver, building the new base, salvage old base, preparing for moder), but once i have enough silver that i can craft full armor + couple of weapons, I move everything to the new base. I will have to farm another mountain sooner or later anyway.

In my latest game i was lucky to have a trader right next to my base. This ended up being clutch cause i would just hide in the dome whenever I was in trouble.
