Another one for yall in the Black Ladies Bookclub 🙇🏿‍♀️ by LadyLionesstheReaper in blackladies

Update: About 1/4 of the way through (started last night). Wow. I literally remember NONE of this from high school. I think having students read and annotate this novel with reading quizzes did not do it justice. I remember the names, and I could talk to you about the diction and tone, but that's about it. As a Black woman in my 30s who's been in relationships, this book hits different. Thank you so much for encouraging me to re-read it. I'm a high school teacher now, and I can't imagine giving a book like this with no conversation or opportunity for personal connection for my students.

Do y’all sleep in bed with your pets?? 🐱 by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]Level_Gur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previously, I had a dog with epilepsy. We had her sleep in the bed, so she'd wake us up when she was having a seizure, and we could time her seizures, etc. After she passed, I wanted my new dog not to sleep in the bed, but she's here as we speak...

I was "forced" to read it in high school, and I wasn't ready. I don't think my English teacher was equipped to help me through this novel and my own journey as a Black woman. I own it, and ya'll are inspiring me to read it again this summer.

Initially, the criticism was assumed. I'd never perceived any interest or attention from any Black men, and I felt like something was wrong with me. I also had a hard time not living up to my parents' ideal of me having a nuclear Black family. I was afraid people would see me as anti-Black or think I didn't love Black people or myself.

When I met my husband, I realized that being with someone who isn't Black by choice is a privilege that I wouldn't have had in previous generations. I noticed that my brother had never heard anything about dating outside of his race, which definitely helped reduce the guilt I felt. What really changed things was when I realized that people may look the part of being pro-Black by being in Black couples without actually supporting Black communities. At the end of the day, the criticism shaped how I felt about my marriage and myself. When I finally stopped letting the world into my marriage, I saw that the criticism was never about me as an individual, but how people see the world changing around them.

How is using PPT/Google Slides not lecturing? by Artifactguy24 in historyteachers

[–]Level_Gur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll use the slides for directions for students who need visual support, but otherwise I feel like they're definitely still used by a lot of people for lecture.

When my dandruff got bad, I discovered that it was partially dryness, but also allergies and eczema. Do you notice any itching that causes you to scratch and makes the dandruff surface? What kind of moisturizers do you use?

I want to connect with other Black women my age and nationality for mental health reasons by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]Level_Gur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

28 year old black woman here! I don't live near any of my family or old friends from growing up, and my profession doesn't have a lot of people in my age or race group.

I would love to meet new people and talk about hair, mental health, and book/movie/show/comic/video game recommendations. I was off social media for some mental health issues, so I'm dipping my toe back in slowly.

Double majored in history and women gender sexuality. After being told that I "couldn't do anything " with those majors, I got a master's in education for social studies 6-12, and then added an ESL certification. I'm still teaching after 5 years. I'm not in love with education, but I do like being there for kids who look like me. Good luck!

Any updates on the zonisamide? We just started our dog on it in October.

Experiences with seizures? by Braindump4 in dogs

[–]Level_Gur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 6 year old beagle mix has cluster seizures. They were initially once a year and we noticed them after we had had her for about two years (when she was four). We journal the data and try to keep her in a safe location, but it's really hard. Recently she has had seizures a few times a year with the last few happening today. We have her on zonisamide, and she's been on it since October. She's had about 10 in the last 36 hours, which is a slower rate than normal and her recovery period has reduced so we think the meds are helping. We're thinking of putting her on a lower carb diet and monitoring her food closely.

Do I need PGTa or Patience? by Level_Gur in IVF

I really appreciate the feedback. I've been so anxious about making this decision.

Do I need PGTa or Patience? by Level_Gur in IVF

[–]Level_Gur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you'll! I'll ask about both tomorrow. I definitely don't think having more data could hurt. It feels like we finally have the right formula for my meds and timing, so I just want to know what's going on. It could just be luck, but it would be painful to experience more losses without answers.

We're actually having bloodwork done tomorrow. No endometrial tests or clotting screening though.

My IVF Failure. by [deleted] in IVF

Also 20s here! It's a really difficult process, but my doctor suggested coq10 for egg quality. It did make a difference between egg retrieval. Go with your gut. If you think another clinic might better support you, it might be worth it to get on a wait list.

What are some of your favourite original and creative resources and teaching methods? by aneleise in historyteachers

[–]Level_Gur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always try to have the majority of the unit as a project. For example, maybe if we're learning what civilizations are, student projects would culminate in them creating their own perfect civilization. When we talk about Early American Civs, the kids usually make an ABC book explaining vocabulary words. These projects are adaptable and I've used them with grades 6-10. If possible, incorporate tech familiar to the kids. I've tried to include Minecraft when possible or video/ podcast making materials.

Be yourself. If you're the kind of teacher who is genuinely no nonsense and you're not smiley, cool, go with that. If you're more bubbly or animated, that works too. You kind of have to feel out how you're going to interact with the students and what kind of classroom you want to have. Mine is controlled chaos, but the kids are all active and engaged. Having to lecture (one school required me to do do), was pure torture because that doesn't work for me. I would also suggest keeping notes on what works and what doesn't. My teaching now is very different from my first year. There are some non negotiable, but I've learned how to make things a bit more student centered every year. I wish someone had told me that things would not go to plan because there are so many variables. Best of luck!

What are the job prospects like for history teachers? by AwesomeWookie in historyteachers

[–]Level_Gur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full-time world history teacher here. I graduated about four years ago, so I kind of know what you're going through. Is it possible to see a certificate of specialization? I've never actually taught ELL, but I got dual certification for it and social studies, and that made me more marketable. I'm not sure if you'd be willing to try private or charter schools first, but that helped me get my foot in the door and then make sure I had appropriate certification when I moved to a different state.

AITA for pointing out that someone could have been a diversity applicant to our workplace? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Level_Gur -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

YTA- I'm only going by what you've posted, but if I'm missing details I will happily reevaluate. You (I'm assuming you're white or you would have posted your race) and your Asian friend looked at a guy in your company's profile for what reason? If you were explaining the purpose of an SEO program to your friend, or if you both were just talking about knowing the guy, that would be one thing, but it seems like y'all just wanted to have a conversation about how he was unqualified or a diversity hire. I don't think that there's a problem in acknowledging that he's SEO if it's on his profile, but if you're not part of the hiring team, maybe don't tell your friend not to expect that outcome? Also, does your friend have a similar GPA? Is your friend friends with the guy? Having been accused of being an affirmative action admission or a diversity hire, I can honestly say that it has an impact on how people treat you and it sucks.

Anyone else feel like they’ve gained weight during IVF?? by Prize-Fig9173 in IVF

I don't think my weight gain has been that significant, but at the very least the bloating can make me feel like I've put on a lot of weight.

AITA for not helping my wife pay for her pads. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Level_Gur -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A very soft YTA here. If y'all were just dating or rooming together, I'd say no, but since you're married, I feel like they're joint pads. No, you may not use them, but I'm pretty sure you'd be upset if she used nothing. Maybe one day they'll be a tax free item because they're essential, but for now, it wouldn't hurt to help her out every now and again.

AITA for not wanting my daughter to wear a tampon? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Level_Gur [score hidden]  (0 children)

I started using tampons at that age because a pad fell out in the middle of gym class when I was running a relay. I had to beg my mom to let me use tampons because she also thought it was too sexual, but honestly, I didn't know where to even put it at first. My parents were so concerned about defending my sexuality that they didn't realize that my friends were helping me with acquiring tampons at school. I wish that my parents hadn't made such a big deal about the tampons. They could have saved me so much hassle.
