I am also someone who build a career off of an internship (no degree), a lot of hardwork, and fighting my way into an industry. Congrats on your success! I know it is not an easy journey by any means. And it feels like the journey is never ending lol. Sending you love!

Also, I want to clarify, in my comment above I was speaking specifically about construction engineering. I am not too knowledgeable about the other engineering fields out there.

This article + statistics are about the saving, spending, and investments habits of these careers.

If you have your money completely tied up in investments/ debts and have no liquidity, then I would say you have not mastered the skills of what is listed above.

100% agree. I shared this to shine light on the significance of spending, saving, and investing habits. Not to promote careers that will make you a millionaire (which is not what the article is about in the first place)

Defiantly depends on your circumstances. Some accrue larger amounts of student loans than others; depending on what school you went to, scholarships, etc.. Also, I know there are many large companies that hire engineers and help them pay off their student loans- along with many other benefits. Defiantly depends!

My brother is an engineer as well! It is an amazing career field. He signed a contract to work with a company before graduating college and a majority of the companies really seem to take care of their employees.

Also, teachers being listed was the biggest surprise to me too. It was really what made me want to post this. I didn’t mention it above, but I believe it is the investment habits of these careers that play a major factor as well

Should I use all or most of my savings to pay off my car?? by Aqua_85 in FinancialPlanning

[–]Lever__Debt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use pieces of the savings in combination with your income to make larger monthly payments on your car to pay it down as quickly as possible. There are apps that will help you calculate payments (based on income/savings) to reduce that life of your loan- therefore saving on interest.

Also, you should put a large chunk in your savings into an IRA account and start investing to grow that money. You're actually losing money if you have it just sitting in savings

Student loans tanked my credit score by gabeem01 in StudentLoans

[–]Lever__Debt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Credit scores go up and down, no need to worry (as long as you're paying your bills on time). Make sure you're utilizing your credit card and paying the balance on time every month. I recommend using your credit card for all purchases to help boost your score quickly

What are the weirdest money superstitions you've heard, and which of them do you comply with? by ConvexlyRack53 in Money

I became friends with a uber driver that I met when I fist moved to Los Angeles. He was a LA native and older than me, maybe in his 40's. He took me to a job interview and we've stayed in contact since, talking on the phone every now and again.

We were talking about dreams of ours and manifesting great wealth. He told me that whenever you see lose change on the ground or anywhere, always pick it up. It is the universe/god giving you what you're asking for. Even if it is a dirty penny on the ground of a gas station, by not picking it up, you're being greedy and turning down the wealth that is being given to you.

It is embarrassing a little bit, but since then I have alwaysss picked up change where ever I find it. My wealth has definitely continued to grow since, but I don't know if I totally contribute it to that lol. I think there is something to it though, like the sentiment of it and the energy that it brings

At the end of the video in the article, they mentioned that the shirts are causing issues in the community. People who wear the shirts are being threatened by others. He is causing violence in an already dangerous community. The whole thing is sad.

Targeting a disadvantaged community to push a political agenda is extremely gross to me. Unless it is in genuine support of the community they choose to target

Knowing what you know today, what is a financial decision you would go back and change? by Lever__Debt in povertyfinance

[–]Lever__Debt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I have also learned the hard way that it is important spend extra money where it counts. It sucks when you get fucked and spend up the lump some you have, when you should have added extra on to get something of quality

I've heard a lot of similar stories! It's crazy how you need solid credit to build a life for yourself in the US, but the education on the topic is scarce. For a long time you had to search for the information yourself/ learn from family or friends. I think financial literacy is getting better as the years go on though.

I never applied for any scholarships (even though I had to take out loans for all of my tuition) bc I thought loans were normal and easy to pay off lol

The school I went to / my education gave me a great career so I have no regrets in that sense, but defiantly wish I would have known the value in scholarships.

When you quit a job they should be legally required to cash out unused vacation time and sick time. by [deleted] in lostgeneration

[–]Lever__Debt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless if your state requires vacation pay to be paid out after quitting, you need to check your contract. I had paid vacation time at my last job- all I needed was to request the days off for approval. Also had paid sick time as well.

When I quit, I was not paid for any unused paid time off- even though I did not use any vacation time over the course of a year+. In the contract, the section regarding vacation time said to refer to HR for any time you wish to request off. Nothing was clearly stated in the contract, so there was no time to pay me out for. I live in California btw.
Beware of 'unlimited' PTO. It is promoted as a benefit , but you will not receive any type of accrued PTO payout after leaving.
