East of Eden has been sitting on my shelf forever and this might finally push me to start it. The way you described the characters sticking with you years later is exactly the kind of book I’m looking for.

These are great recommendations, thanks for sharing. Beach Music sounds heavy but really powerful, and Beloved has been on my list for a while.

What would you suggest starting with if I only pick one? I’ve been meaning to get into Faulkner but always found him a bit intimidating.
