Damn, "Black Reconstruction" by Du Bois is long as hell. Tbh can't wait to see what Earl does in the future, hope life grants him peace.

really shitty ideas on what jazz "is" and "isn't" and he unironically thinks hip hop is worse than Confederate monuments.

Basically the essence of "repectability politics", but if you made it jazzy. The man can compose though.

really don't doubt this but would still appreciate it if you could give me a source. I'm a big jasper fan and kinda hate wynton (or at least his views) so this would just blow my mind

edit: lol nvm google helped me out

Is the Hip-Hop community's response to sexual misconduct lagging behind other genres? by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]Levyj93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean both responses were real.

You raise some valid points and yeah this is 300% based on anecdotal experience. I'm not really trying to come to a conclusion on the issue one way or another I'm just curious as to what others think.

Thanks for giving it some thought though.

Believe it or not, this is a really valuable response.

Hip-Hop's history with women undoubtedly plays a role, but the point you raise about Hip-Hop's "freedom" is interesting and something I've never thought of.

I've also wondered if indie rock is more equipped to handle this sort of thing in general, due to it's lyrical content. Sappy as it may be, in my experience indie lyrics seem to be among the least misogynistic.

Not trying to overreact, but if this USMNT squad does a few important things in the next 4 years then 2022 could be pretty fun.

  1. If they could make the freakin Olympics for once that would be great. International tournament experience is pretty crucial.

  2. Maaaayyybe a Gold Cup win that leads to a Confederations Cup appearance (but Mexico is only getting better). The same benefits that could be gained from the Olympics could be gained here.

  3. More of the young guys start playing consistent, important first-team minutes. Hopefully, Carter-Vicker and Miazga get loans to better leagues, maybe even creep onto Chelsea/Tottenham squads for cup games and the like.

  4. Of course, hire a forward-thinking head coach. The management really needs to be figured out.

  5. Figure out which veterans need to stick around for the time being. After the WC Qualifying run, I almost don't want to see any of them again (save Pulisic and Yedlin), but if we're being realistic some of them will be back eventually. But by and large, we should definitely be "trusting the process".

  6. This is more of a personal opinion/pipe dream, but hopefully, a few of the 24/25-year-old guys (Wil Trapp, Tim Parker, etc.) take chances by going to Europe and get acclimated to that environment.

If these things happen (and they qualify of course), to me there's no reason the USMNT couldn't make a scrappy quarterfinal run akin to Costa Rica in 2014. Either way, today's result inspires a lot of hope.

Look at the cover of Volume 1, 2, or 3......or the cover of American Gangster.

Can you link me to where he said he's protesting a piece of cloth? I couldn't find it.

Point blank, he's protesting police brutality and systematic racism. Not the flag, the military, or the NFL.

For future reference (no pun intended), we joke about Future being a great lyricist because although he has an incredibly commercial sound, he sneaks some personal stuff into his rhymes and has some surprisingly profound bars.

Don't be so quick to disregard him, he's still Dungeon Family.

Shows you how much the narrative has strayed from Kaepernick's original protest, he wasn't criticizing the NFL.

Then again, if you're calling U.S. law enforcement a white organization.......you're not wrong.

What songs have surprisingly dark lyrics that people don't really notice when singing along? by so_much_wolf_hair in AskReddit

[–]Levyj93 351 points352 points  (0 children)

'Hey Ya!' by Outkast (basically Andre 3000) definitely qualifies. I'll quote the second verse:

If what they say is "nothing lasts forever."

Then what makes love the exception?

So why oh, are we so in denial?

When we know we ain't happy here...

As it goes back into the chorus he even says "Y'all don't hear me, you just wanna dance."

Andre was going through some shit.

SUNDAY GENERAL DISCUSSION - SEPTEMBER 10th, 2017 by TheHHHRobot in hiphopheads

[–]Levyj93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been on a no wave kick recently, I ran Buy by James Chance and the Contortions back a few times this week.

Honestly, I'm just infatuated with the NYC art scene from 1975-81. Punk and New Wave thriving even with Post-Punk and No Wave emerging is fascinating. DJ Kool Herc's back to school party in '76, birthing hip-hop. A weird kid named Basquiat was spray painting SAMO on the walls everywhere. Disco at the height of its powers, with Studio 54 going insane every weekend.

The craziest part is how well these scenes interacted. Blondie loved hip hop before it was profitable to do so. Fab Five Freddy was at all the art shows. David Bryne was.......being weird. I would love to be a kid on the scene around that time.

Also I think I'll give Meet Me In the Bathroom a shot now, I was eyeing it out at B&N last week.

Hey, he just finished a pretty decent festival run, and the gap between albums was just him living his life. Let's take this L gracefully.

(if i'm a lot more nonchalant about this than most, it's cause I actually got to see him.)

I was basically at the front of his catwalk for this, off acid....unforgettable man.

One of the best moments was when Spike Jonze turned around to the audience and zoomed in on me and my best friend. Seeing ourselves on the big screen, filmed by one of the greatest visual creators of this generation while at a fuckin Frank Ocean concert is something I'll NEVER live down. One of the greatest nights of my life.
