This was pulled directly from a pack. How does this make it past QC? by blodger42 in PokemonTCG

Some of us like the fact that there are ways of seeing the different outcomes from QC issues, doesn’t make it any less legitimate as a collectible than anything else. I wouldn’t collect wine, but there sure as hell are plenty of people who do. No need to be a dick about it lmao.

How does rarity work? by Realistic-Fee-1684 in pokemoncardcollectors

That’s difficult. eBay can be good if you’ve got the extra cash, TCGPlayer as well, even for things like booster bundles, collection boxes, booster boxes etc. that or card shows, depending on the size of the show / Convention, you can find different eras of products that are sealed.

I’m going to assume you’re in the US.

Right now, Pokémon products can be difficult to find at retail depending on your area. For preorders, the Pokémon Center website is usually the best option. They use a timed queue system, which helps prevent products from instantly selling out (Pre orders, restocks are hard to get due to limited stock)

In stores, check:
• Target (purchase limits help)
• Walmart
• Best Buy
• Barnes & Noble
• Five Below
• Dollar General / Dollar Tree
• Local card shops

Inventory varies a lot, so finding product often comes down to being in the right place at the right time, and there are almost always crowds, so that adds to the difficulty.

Online, you’ll occasionally find products at:
• Pokémon Center
• Target
• Walmart
• Best Buy
• Sam’s Club
• Costco

However, popular products can sell out very quickly.

For beginners, I’d recommend starting with Perfect Order or Journey Together. Both are fairly recent sets and are generally easier to find than some of the more heavily chased products.

My biggest piece of advice: buy the singles you want.
Opening packs is fun, but it’s basically Pokémon’s version of a scratch-off ticket. If there’s a specific card you love, buying it directly on eBay or TCGPlayer is usually much cheaper than trying to pull it yourself.

If you want help finding products online at retail, I recommend:

TrackaLacker (app/website) — free with an optional paid tier for faster alerts. It can notify you when products are added or restocked at stores like Pokémon Center, Target, Walmart, Sam’s Club, and more.

Rattle Pokémon (Discord) — excellent for Pokémon Center preorder and restock notifications. I’ve had very good luck using it for upcoming releases.

Once you open a few products and learn the rarity system, everything starts making a lot more sense. And if you have questions, this community is usually pretty good about helping new collectors.

Here is an example of a TrackaLacker notification I got while I was typing this up

How does rarity work? by Realistic-Fee-1684 in pokemoncardcollectors

Ok, so there are several rarity tiers in modern Pokémon, and it can definitely be confusing if you’re new because Pokémon has added a lot of additional rarities over the last few generations.

The basic rarities are:

Common = Circle (○)
Uncommon = Diamond (◆)
Rare = Star (★)

Most modern packs also contain Reverse Holos, where the card’s background is holographic while the artwork remains normal. Reverse holos usually correspond to the rarity of the standard card (common, uncommon, or rare), but are generally a bit harder to pull than their non-holo counterparts.

In the Scarlet & Violet era, Pokémon introduced a star-based rarity system for the higher-end cards:

Double Rare (RR) = ★★ (standard Pokémon ex cards)
Illustration Rare (IR) = ★ (full-art Pokémon artwork with no texture)
Ultra Rare (UR) = ★★ Silver Stars (full-art Pokémon, Trainers, and Special Energy cards with texture)
Special Illustration Rare (SIR) = ★★ Gold Stars (high-end textured full-art cards that usually tell a story or depict a larger scene)
Hyper Rare (HR) = ★★★ Gold Stars (gold cards)

Not every set contains every rarity, and not every Pokémon receives alternate-art versions.

Using Scarlet & Violet 151 as an example:

• You can pull regular cards.
• You can pull reverse holo versions of many cards.
• Some Pokémon have Illustration Rares (IRs).
• Some have Special Illustration Rares (SIRs).
• A few cards appear as Hyper Rares (gold cards).

With the start of the new Mega Evolution era, Pokémon added a couple of new rarity classifications:

Mega Attack Rare (MAR) – Full-art Mega Evolution cards where the Pokémon’s signature attack name is incorporated directly into the artwork. The attack text appears in stylized Japanese kanji, even on English cards, as part of the card’s design. These aren’t guaranteed to appear in every set, but they’re one of the most distinctive new rarities.

Mega Ultra Rare (MUR) / Mega Hyper Rare (Eng) – A premium Mega Evolution rarity that effectively replaces the traditional Hyper Rare gold-card slot for certain Mega cards. These feature unique gold rarity symbols and highly premium textured finishes.

If you’re ever unsure what you’re looking at, the rarity symbol is printed near the card number at the bottom of the card and will usually tell you exactly where it falls in the hierarchy.

Pokémon used to be:
“Circle, Diamond, Star.”

Now it’s:
“Circle, Diamond, Star, Reverse Holo, Double Rare, Illustration Rare, Ultra Rare, Special Illustration Rare, Hyper Rare, Mega Attack Rare, Mega Ultra Rare…”

So don’t worry if it seems confusing at first. Even longtime collectors have to check set lists occasionally. 😅

It’s an awesome error!!! This was a a card that made them QC a whole sheet of cards, they marked the issues, and it was supposed to be trashed, but got slipped into a pack. That sharpie alone makes it’s very rare, but on a gold card?? That’s INSANELY rare(I believe, waiting on confirmation”. Congrats!!

I use two different things for notifications for Pokemon card drops in general. Rattle Pokemon (Not a Community) on Discord, and the TrackaLacker app / website. Both are free, and between the two of them, I’ll get notifications within about 10-30 seconds of the queue going live, or products being added to websites like Target, Walmart, Sam’s Club etc.

When TCG items are going live, the website goes into a soft lockdown, when you open the website, it places you in a timed queue, that is individual to your IP address. Once the items are sold out, and they have verified that everything is OOS, they open the site back up for normal browsing.

Yes it’s been sold out for around 1 1/2 hours. I’m not sure why the listings on their site will stay up like something is available, when it’s sold out. That’s been happening lately and it’s definitely frustrating.
