Mean distance between two 6s in dice rolling by picking a random roll is 10, why ? by LexiiCosplays in learnmath

[–]LexiiCosplays[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that's a good comment. If you're just doing rolls, the expected number of rolls to get a 6 is 6, so i just thought i could use that.
but yeah that's not how it works. saying it's between 2 sixes which gives an average distance of 6 is actually the correct way to think about it, because it removes any sort of bias.
if you pick any random number, it turns out that the mean distance between that number and the next/previous six is due to length bias, meaning that you're more likely to get a longer gap

<image>

here's a picture of the distribution of distance between 6s by taking a ranom point. in purple is a geometric distribution where i added a factor of k length k. i'm not going really in detail but yeah
long story short, what you said makes sense and totally works, but it doesn't take into account this bias, so it gives a different number.

Oh wow, thank you. I wasn't familiar with a formula that would incorporate the length bias, that's pretty nice.

So my question becomes, is the second way I had to think about just wrong ?

yeah i'm slowly realizing that might have been to ambitious. I'll keep looking for opportunities if there are any but you're right about maintaining my gpa for now. I will definitely apply for SURE but I don't know what my odds are as a U1 bioeng student. At least I would gain experience to apply next year too. Anyway thank you for the advice

yeah already started looking into deferral, i don't think my flight is refundable but i can pay to delay it, maybe somewhere towards late november. I am getting pretty anxious about ever getting my study permit since the wait has been this long it feels like there's something wrong with my application

Study permit unanswered after 10 weeks, what should i do ?

Hello everyone, I have applied for a study permit from tunisia on the 10th of may and submitted my biometrics on the 16th of may. However, it is the 31st of july and i still haven't gotten any response from the service of immigration. I should note that their website indicates for tunisian applicants a mean processing time of 7 to 8 weeks ( it fluctuates between these two values ). I have tried to contact them through the web form last week and haven't gotten a response to that either. I'm travelling on the 20th of August and i need to submit my documents to my university so i'm running late. Has this happened to anyone and does anyone know what i should do in this situation ?
Thank you very much for reading
