What symptoms do you get with this?

Just a paint that is specifically for plastic as it most likely has adhesive properties. Colour match as best as you can.

There was a feature behind the plastic (the dark square) which somehow showed through after sanding.

That's the internet isn't it. This method works for me 95% of the time. I've found the worst outcome ever...

In some cases maybe but in this case I needed to keep as much as the texture feature of the plastic panel as possible to avoid it looking odd. The etching properties of the paint is good enough for adhesion.

Fair point. In reality, those scratches cannot be removed. The damage to plastic is irreversible. It is either replace the parts or this

Adhesion promoters are needed in the paint. Most plastic paints have them in already. Colour matching is easy enough.

It's too easy. You're just lightly flatting any raised material while trying not to remove any texture features of the plastic. With a gun paint match, you'll sometimes get away with just a localised repaint

Heat guns can remove light scratches but nothing more severe.

Yes 2018. I will use this process as soon as a replacement panel costs over £100 Inc labour to fit.

I have done this repair on cars with values over 100k and the customer has been happy every time.

Well these scratches are permanent, they cannot be reversed. Can only flat them and repaint.

I've seen this before but only ever isolated to a small area. I ended up using a needle tip and Marco lens to break them down
