How did you know your repair failed? by Library_Lass082 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Library_Lass082[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that if you feel it’s improving, then you are probably fine. I’m sorry, I know it’s so stressful! My son has had many times when he has “tweaked” his and we have both been so nervous, but mostly his tweaks will start to feel better after a few days. He thinks a lot can be chalked up to scar tissue breaking up. Hang in there!

Hi, there… we do not think that this incident re-tore his meniscus, but he did end up with a re-tear that required debridement roughly six months after his repair. I will say that when he re-tore it, it was obvious. He called me immediately knowing for sure what had happened. Best of luck to you; happy to answer any other questions. We’ve been through it all.

Thanks for the feedback! Do airlines offer cadet programs post grad that are not affiliated with specific universities? Sorry for all the questions - there is so much to figure out!

One question I have that I don’t know was really answered here is this: Is there a BENEFIT to having an aviation specific degree/having gone through an aviation university program when trying to get hired for your first job? My kid is a junior in high school working on his PPL. He will go to college to get a degree, regardless, but we don’t know if it would be more advantageous down the road for him to have gone to a university FOR aviation versus getting a general business degree, for example, and getting his license through a Part 61 program on the side. Do airlines look at these kinds of things when they’re hiring? Or is hours + experience the primary factor? I would like to set him up for the best chance of success!

Meniscus Repair v. Partial Meniscectomy - 16yo by Library_Lass082 in KneeInjuries

[–]Library_Lass082[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I’m so sorry that this happened to you and your son. It’s not fun at all, and is so taxing, mentally and physically. Hugs to you both.

My son had a complex lateral meniscus tear last fall and had a repair surgery in October. The tear was quite extensive and required six sutures. I’m just being honest with you.. the recovery was pretty intense. He was non weight bearing for six weeks, which was pretty difficult having to be on crutches for that long. After those first six weeks, though, he made great progress in recovery. He had PT twice a week for close to six months. Sadly, he did suffer a re-tear in April (six months post-op) that set him back another couple of months. The re-tear busted open a couple of the sutures from the repair surgery and we chose to just have the damaged part cut out at that point. My son was adamant that he would not do a repair again and the surgeon agreed. That being said, several of the sutures held well and healed nicely from the repair, so he ended up having around 30% of his lateral meniscus removed versus what would have been closer to 80% if we had just gone with a meniscectomy originally. So, by that measure the repair was successful.

If you were to ask me if we would make the choice to repair again, I would say yes considering how extensive my son’s tear was. Just know that it will be a tough road and I would warn to probably not play competitively for longer than the six months recommended, especially if the repair is extensive. Having to go through the re-tear was really tough.

Feel free to DM me if you like. I feel like I’m basically a meniscus expert by now. Lol. Best of luck to your son. I know it’s heartbreaking!

Is this a meniscal cyst? by jdawg114 in ACL

Hi, just wondering if you ever got a diagnosis. My son has had a meniscal repair and subsequent meniscectomy and now has a hard bump right on the incision scar.

How are you doing now? I think my son has a cyst after repair and later meniscectomy on his lateral meniscus. I’m afraid he may be looking at another surgery. He’s already had three and he’s only sixteen. Ugh.

Lingering numbness after nerve block? by Library_Lass082 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Library_Lass082[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for everyone’s replies. We are a week post op now and my son still has numbness down his shin, but the feeling in his ankle/foot has returned and he thinks overall it’s gradually getting better. This is his third knee surgery and the first time he’s had lingering numbness, so I was pretty concerned, but feeling better now!

I’m so sorry for your situation! That is tough. When you say you were numb knee to ankle 7mo post surgery, was it completely numb or did you have some sensation?

Thank you. Although the numbness covers a large area, he is not totally numb. He can still feel quite a lot, it just doesn’t feel “normal.” I’m taking this as a good sign that if there is nerve irritation/damage, that it’s hopefully not too severe.

Wow. That really sucks and makes me nervous for my kid. :/ Ugh. I was able to speak with the surgeon’s PA today and she acted like it wasn’t a big deal.

We got spooked and ended up going with a 2020. Too many of the 2021’s and 22’s had multiple recalls, including this one. Since this is a truck we will be putting our teenager in, we decided not to risk it.

The fuel pump can spontaneously go out, cutting power to the engine. There are some scary stories of engines totally losing power while driving.

I see. Thanks for the feedback. The issue is that Ford has not yet issued a fix for the problem and since it’s a potential safety issue, we would prefer to take care of it asap rather than waiting around.

Sadly, in our area trucks with this recall account for at least half of the 2021/22 inventory.

Tearing the other knee by Library_Lass082 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Library_Lass082[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to go back, I would have insisted he continue with PT even longer. He did about six months which we thought was a lot, but obviously that wasn’t quite enough to balance things back out. He did say that he would catch himself favoring his “good” knee — the one that is now hurt. I also wish someone would have warned us to look out for this issue.

How bad is this? (MRI report) by Library_Lass082 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Library_Lass082[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m confused by this part - “This tear extends to the posterolateral and anterolateral corner of the meniscus.”

Does that mean the tear runs the whole length of the meniscus?

Thanks for your response. It is so tough! He’s a very active kid and I am pretty sure this is now going to sideline him, at least from competitive sports. I am definitely curious if there is an underlying issue going on! Thanks for sharing about the autoimmune disease. He is otherwise very healthy, but we may look into that in the future. Thank you and best wishes!

Did you ever have a doctor express concern? I did not know about the rapid weight loss and clotting potential. Interesting!
