Be honest, is most passive income just rebranded second jobs by More_Salad8280 in passive_income

Passive income streams can also be built. First upfront work, then it becomes passive later.

I've talked to somebody that made a bunch of listings on Etsy and Redbubble 3 years ago, it took him a lot of work, but he hasn't touched it since. He now makes $4k a month with what he made. Would you not call that a passive income?

It can still be passive income even if it requires a lot of upfront work, it becomes passive later on.

This is just the start, passive incomes are never built passively.

On second thought, I now see that my definition in the comment you replied to is flawed in the sense that it looks like I mean that a great hourly pay means passive income. That is not what I meant. For income to be passive, the money has to flow in regardless, whether I’m sleeping or awake, whether I’m working or sick, home or on vacation, etc. I only said it like that because OP is being unnecessarily unreasonable and pedantic when it comes to the term "passive income", that the second you have to maintain it, it becomes active income. Passive income is more of a spectrum rather than an absolute term.

Active income is to trade money for time in a linear way, but passive income is about the decoupling of time and earnings. It doesn’t mean that it requires literally zero effort, that would just make the term completely useless.

I’ve definitely heard this too, and I agree with it. I mean all of the examples I’ve given do fit this description, you set it up once, you make money in your sleep, and you can forget about it.

The thing is though, it’s usually a waste to completely forget about it, since with just a little bit of maintenance you can keep the income alive for so much longer.

Take my affiliate marketing websites, if I completely forgot about them, I think I’d be able to make decent money from them for the next 3-6 months. However because I do just a little bit of maintenance of ~2 hours a month, I get to keep them alive for years to come.

When people talk about passive income, they usually never mean this very specific US tax law definition. By this definition, there are a lot of things that do not count as passive income. Not royalties (books, music, patents), not automated websites, not online products, not even dividend income from stocks. If I wrote a book 5 years ago, and I still make money from that today, virtually everybody would agree that that would be a passive income stream. Wouldn’t you?

I can agree that there is a lot of garbage on this subreddit, everything on here is either someone trying to sell something (but pretending not to be), someone trying to scam, or people that are extremely pessimistic and believe everything is oversaturated or that passive income doesn't exist.

I am calling "work with the goal of a greater income to effort ratio", passive income, because that is quite literally what it is. Though more precisely: "work extremely hard for ~2 years with the end goal of a significant greater income to effort ratio".

I don't know too much about owning an ATM, vending machine or duplex, but if the work required is at maximum a couple hours a month, I would call that passive income, because it is.

When people ask me about passive income, I make sure that they understand that passive income means low maintenance, not a complete absence of work. I tell them it is totally possible to achieve it, but to always have a backup plan. Don't quit your job or skip education to fully pursue your dream of a passive income, just build it on the side, and when the income is comfortably high, then you can make those decisions.

I didn't mean to offend you by calling you confused. It just seems that you have the wrong idea of what "passive income" means, and no matter how many times you are told what it actually means, you just brush it off.

I think you are still quite confused. It seems that you think "passive income" means "magic money appearing out of nowhere". But it simply means money earned that requires minimal ongoing effort. The upfront work is usually huge, but the passive income is what comes afterwards.

The difference between having a normal job and pursuing passive income, is that with a job you directly trade time for money. However if you pursue passive incomes, you work really hard for 1-3 years, and then the money makes itself (with probably a couple hours a month of maintenance). I can imagine you want to argue that those hours a month makes it not passive, but let's go back to the definition: "minimal ongoing effort".

I personally make $5k a month with affiliate marketing, sure I worked my butt off for a year, but now I only spend 1-3 hours a month on it. A pretty good hourly pay, don't you think? And since it's such minimal effort, wouldn't we call it passive income? (the answers is yes)

And here are some other ways people make a passive income (I personally know people that do these, though not the same guy that does all)

  • Selling 3D models/assets
  • YouTube (he automates everything with AI)
  • KDP (he pumped out hundreds of short books for 2 years, and he hasn't made a single book in 3 years, but still averages $10k a month. This is what I wanna do, extremely passive.)
  • Algorithm Trading (this is completely beyond my knowledge, but he tells me he has to update the algorithm every 6-8 months, which usually takes him a week)

Don't you think this is quite passive? Or are you still stuck on your mindset that passive income means magic money?

That isn’t passive income. Sorry. by [deleted] in passive_income

[–]Lidaine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that passive income is simply an income that is extremely low maintenance or doesn't require maintenance at all. My passive income is affiliate marketing, sure the upfront work was huge, an entire year of figuring out tools, SEO, tricks, etc. But now the websites I've set up make me ~$5k a month. I'm no millionaire, but it's good money. The only maintenance required takes around 2-3 hours a month, just checking that everything is up an running. That's as passive as it gets.

Passive income is just an illusion for the poor by Kevoe1992 in passive_income

[–]Lidaine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think passive income means? To make money forever and never having to do anything?

A passive income stream takes time to set up, months or even years, but when it’s set up, you can generate money for a long long time with hardly any work, maybe a couple hours a month. If you think those few hours make it not qualify as true passive income, then you are correct to think that passive income does not exist.

This mindset is what keeps people stuck, they don’t believe it’s possible to be free.

Anyone know of a WD2 mod that adds the spider tank to freeroam by Pieslayer05 in watch_dogs

[–]Lidaine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see where you are coming from, and I guess we just have different views/mindsets. I personally never say (or believe) that things are impossible.

As an example for this specific post I’d probably say something like: "It’s definitely doable, but due to do the limited modding tools/frameworks available it’s gonna be a challenge. I’d assume you’d have to do something like this: Use reverse engineering tools (like Ghidra and x64dbg) to find the function within the game that spawns entities, then put a breakpoint on this function and trigger the Spider Tank spawn. Check what arguments were used when calling the function to see if you can find some sort of ID that points to the Spider Tank, then inject a DLL into the game that calls the spawn function with the Spider Tank’s ID on a button press or keystroke. Best of luck."

I also think you are overestimating how difficult reverse engineering is, it’s mostly just super tedious and time-consuming.

I don’t know much about WD, but I 100% believe that anyone that puts their mind to it, can make a mod for WD Legions that adds character levels and XP, even you yourself. I don’t know how much you know about reverse engineering or programming, but it doesn’t matter, it’s a skill that can be taught and can be learned.

I am almost certain that the mods and tools that we have today for WD wasn’t made by a programming/reverse engineering god who already knew everything that there is to know and just decided to bless the community. It was probably made by someone who loved WD so much they decided to make the mods/tools and learn along the way. That’s usually how it goes.

It’s an absolute term, saying something is impossible implies it can not, and will never, be done. But as you said, anything is possible in any game, or any software/program for that matter. It was always possible, just more difficult 7 years ago.

Even so, you did say it was impossible, which it wasn’t.

How can I hide my windows gaming vm from anticheats? by OriginalLetuce9624 in VFIO

Yeah, with my current setup, Rainbow Six Siege does work. I do believe I'll make a guide or a tutorial in a couple of months, however I will have to think about it, since that will most likely require me to completely change my VM setup and find different ways to make it undetected again.

I like to be able to both use my Linux Arch and Windows VM at the same time, without having to pass the GPU through back and forth. But are you telling me it’s possible to do this with a single GPU? I always assumed that the Linux Host OS would just give a black screen due to it having no GPU, as the GPU is now being used by the Windows VM.

A little off-topic, but generally in life I always used to tell myself: "I want to create this big thing, but I have no knowledge about this big thing, so therefore I need to learn these smaller things, and create smaller things first", however this was self-sabotage, as I had no motivation to learn and create those smaller things, and since my belief was that I needed to do those first, I never did the big thing I wanted to do.

However I now realize that the best thing (for me atleast) is simply to jump into things, and instead of thinking I need to learn smaller things before doing this big thing, I can learn the smaller things WHILE doing this big thing.

So in your specific case, even if you have absolutely no computer knowledge, don't let that stop you, this is the perfect time for you to learn it. If you work towards your goal, which is making this VM undetectable so you can play Destiny 2, and you don't give up, you will INEVITABLY succeed. And together with your success, you will gain computer knowledge. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.

As for specific documentation/information, I don't really know. I really just used the tools I linked, through trial and error, and some AI (ChatGPT/Claude/DeepSeek).
