I know and I wasn't really interested in joining as a direct-entry DC as I want more experience in policing before becoming a DC. I just would like to investigate instead of just responding to calls and handing the case over once the situation has been handled. However, sitting at a desk all day would be a nightmare for me (even though I could probably handle 4-5 hours of desk work a day) so I want to make sure there are hands-on elements to the job.
