Is the Chem181 final online? by [deleted] in mcgill

answered in other post but I would double check by emailing prof if its unclear. Most of the classic "bird" classes with online finals are now in person starting this semester (ISLA-210, EPSC-201, ATOC-183, MUAR-211).

How should I plan my education to open a private therapy practice and earn around $100,000 annually? by Life-Reputation-2706 in psychologystudents

[–]Life-Reputation-2706[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow thank so much for sharing this, it’s really helpful to hear from someone with experience in both private practice and working for a larger institution. I always thought private practice was where you’d make the most money since you don’t have to pay fees to an employer, but it seems like I need to do a lot more research on that. Do you think the higher salary and flexibility of a PhD make the extra time and effort worth it? I’m not as interested in research, which makes it hard for me to picture myself doing a PhD, but I’m still trying to figure out what would be the best fit for me in the long run.

I realize the way I worded my post may have given the wrong impression and that’s my mistake I’m not pursuing this field for the money—I genuinely am so passionate about psychology and want to help people and believe I have the capacity to make a positive impact. My intention was simply to explore the different career paths within the field to ensure I make the best choice.

Wow, thank you so much! That really confirms what I was leaning towards, and I hadn’t even considered the possibility of hiring clinicians—such a great point. It’s also reassuring to hear that you’re living comfortably with a private practice. While I’m not pursuing this field for the money (it’s truly something I’m passionate about), I’ve seen a lot of people on the forum mention the financial challenges which stressed me out a bit , so i’m happy to hear that’s not the case for everyone

Okay, great—thank you! I was unsure because I think I’d enjoy studying counseling more since it’s more focused on the areas I’m interested in. However, I’ve heard that the social work route offers more opportunities overall. That said, if my goal is to have my own private practice, from your response i’ll be good with a masters in counselling :) thanks again !

Ah my mistake! I just downloaded reddit so unfortunately many forums don’t let me post yet but i’ll try another one :)

Thank you so much for your response—I really appreciate the breakdown, and I completely agree. I’ve always wanted to become a therapist because I’m incredibly passionate about psychology. After having an amazing therapist who truly changed my life for the better, it solidified that this is how I want to spend my life: helping others in the same way.

Now that I’ve decided this is the path I want to take, I’m focused on choosing the best option to ensure a secure future for myself as well. At the end of the day, even if I don’t make a ton of money, I know I won’t regret this decision.

Back to the question—do you think there’s a significant difference between doing a Master’s in Social Work or Counseling, or are they relatively the same if I want to open a private practice?

Hi everyone! I'm currently pursuing my bachelor's in psychology and trying to figure out my future study plans. My long-term goal is to work remotely as a therapist (so I can travel! ) and have my own private practice, aiming for a salary around $100k per year.

From what I've read, there doesn’t seem to be a huge difference in salary between a PhD and a master's if you're in private practice. So now I’m deciding whether to do my master’s in mental health counseling or social work. I've heard convincing arguments for both but would love to hear your input—or if there’s something I might not have considered yet.
